Read More	Albert Emil Larson Family History by his daughter Marian Larson Bartholomay: this history written sometime in 1980: Albert Larson's parents came from Norway in the early1860's and settled near Harpers Ferry in Allamakee County, Iowa. Albert was born there in April of 1866, and spent some time as a young man working in logging camps, but after his marriage to Karen Monserud in April 29, 1893, he started to farm. They had five children: Alf, Philip who died in World War I, Alice, Emilie, and Selmer: before they moved to North Dakota in 1903, Albert had come to work in the harvest fields in Sheldon, North Dakota for various farmers in 1902, running the steam engines on the threshing machines: he had gone to school to learn all about steam engines and had a certificate for this. He purchased the farm three miles west of Sheldon (SE1/4-Liverty) from the Ransom County Immigration Association. This land had been homesteaded by Peter Austad. Albert named the farm Center Farm in memory of his township in Iowa and because it was halfway between Sheldon and Ederline, North Dakota. Albert came to Sheldon in a boxcar with all their belongings in March, 1903. Two days later, Karen and the children came by passenger train. Albert didn't have every thing moved out to the farm yet and Alice, who was only six, remembers the bumpy ride in the buggy hooked on behind the wagon: it was a long three miles: Luella and Hilma, both deceased, were born on the Center Farm. With the help of his family, Albert built all the buildings on the farm. They slept in the granary, which was one of the first buildings built, and used the kitchen off the old house to cook and eat in. The rest of the old house was torn down and the lumber used in the new one, which they finished in 1912. The kitchen was later used on a chicken coop. Alice related how they did the harvesting when her brothers, Alf and Philip, were in the service. 1918 was the best crop Albert ever had, and he suffered from severe backaches, so his wife and daughters did the shocking and bundle hauling. A sister-in-law of Albert's was spike pitcher (one who helped load) in the field when they threshed. Selmer ran the steam engine and separator. Albert would haul the grain home and the younger girls with the help of 3 little cousins shoveled the grain off into the bin. They also had to get the meals ready. They couldn't start threshing very early in the morning so Karen and the older girls would line up dinner for them, sometimes making pies and baking bread. Alf married Jennie Olson who taught school in Liberty in 1923, and purchased the farm one mile west from his father (SW1/4-14 Liberty). Alf served on the school board, held many township and church offices, besides being Ransom County Commissioner and supervisor of soil conservation and irrigation committees before his death in 1974. Alf and Jennie raised eight children: Howard of Enderlin, North Dakota: Cathryn (Mrs. Don Reardon) of Cig Harbor, Washington: Allan of Sante Fe, New Mexico: Marian (Mrs. Joe Bartholomay, q.v.) of Sheldon, North Dakota: Chester and John who purchased the family farm after Alf retired: Esther (Mrs. Gilman Braaten) of Meland, North Dakota: and Erling, deceased. Emilie Larson married Bert Steeland, a railroad employee, who came to Enderlin in 1923 from Rochester, Minnesota. They lived in Enderlin until 1939 when they moved to Eugene, Oregon. Selmer married Emma Pett, a nurse, in 1932. Selmer lived on the Center Farm after his father retired to Enderlin, but later bought another farm by the Liberty School, until moving to Vancouver, Washington, in 1945. Luella married Glen Cole and lived in the Lisbon area for many years. Alice was a dressmaker and Hilma was a piano teacher in Enderlin where they lived with their parents until they married. Alice married Elmer Langland in 1945 and lived in Moorhead, Minnesota, Calaway, Minnesota, and Detroit Lakes, Minnesota: then McAllen, Texas, before moving back to Enderlin in 1977 where they still live. Hilma married Frank Helmer who was a blacksmith in Enderlin for many years where she continued teaching piano. Frank and Hilma had two children: Linda and Duane: Hilma passed away November, 1980. Frank is still living in Fargo, North Dakota.
