She passed away on February 28, 2017, following her courageous battle with brain cancer. Her parents were Kenneth Earl Werner and Allene Mae Carter Werner of St. Edward. Karen graduated from St. Edward High School in 1956. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She then graduated from Bryan Hospital School of Nursing with a Registered Nursing degree in 1960, and from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1980. Karen was united in marriage to Del Kenneth Weed on June 5, 1960 at the Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. To their union were born two sons, Daniel Del Weed and William Kenneth Weed. After obtaining her registered nursing degree from Bryan, she accepted a position at the University of Nebraska Student Health Center where she was involved in many nursing duties and directed the outreach program of Health Aides for University students for several years. This included her teaching a credited class for students on current health issues. Karen retired in 2001 after a forty-one year tenure at the University where she met and worked hand in hand with many professional colleagues. Karen paved the way with many supporting letters for students who went into medicine. She always enjoyed hearing about their professional accomplishments in the health field, and many of them have kept in contact over the years. Throughout her life Karen was very dedicated to her family, including early in life with grandparents Edward and Laura Werner and her many uncles, aunts, and cousins in the St. Edward area. Karen was very close to her father, mother, brother, and sister, and extended families and relatives and took their legacies and pushed them into her own family. Karen was very out-going and had many close friends from her schooling and acquaintances through-out life. She was always warm and receptive to listen and support the care of others. She cared dearly for her sons and became very involved in fulfilling their involvement in their high school and college activities and their professional careers, especially in sports and school activities. Karen made many life-long friends in the Meadow Lane and East High School districts, and the South 53rd, Sanborn Drive, Crowne Point Road and Mesa, Arizona community neighborhoods. Her grandchildren, great grandchild, and nieces and nephews were the love of her life as she cared for them in so many special ways, and each of them have their own special memory of Grandma and Aunt Karen that they will never forget. Karen was a wonderful cook, always having the desire to have a great meal on the table every day, and especially on family holidays—her specialty of fried chicken and coconut cream pie was a classic; usually preceded by Chips and Salsa around a family gathering! Karen and Del loved to travel and took many trips, cruises and visits to relatives and friends. One memorable trip was to Norway to visit family that were distant relatives of the Werner’s. She was so dedicated to all that she did. She was an inspiration to many, on so many different levels. Her presence always lit up the room. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Karen was a member of the Christ Methodist and St. Mark’s Methodist church throughout her married life. She worked in the church nursery and her smiling greeting was always warming for those attending church. She volunteered at Bryan Hospital, worked at the Gallup Company, and was an election poll worker for many years. Survivors include: husband, Del; son, Dan and wife Jane (Tews); son, Bill and wife Peg; grandchildren, Emily, David, John, Katherine, Elizabeth, Charles, Anna Grace, and Sophia; great grandchild, Mason; step grandchildren, Megan and Alex; brother, Dick Werner and wife Gayle; sister, Lorrie Werner and husband Dick Standaert; nephews, nieces, cousins, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral service on Friday, March 3, 2017, at St. Marks United Methodist Church. burial in St. Edward, Nebraska. Obituary information from Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home of Lincoln, Nebraska.
