Born March 25, 1938, to Orville Glen "O.G." and Gladys (Gross) Horsman, Karen was the baby of the family. As such, she was doted on and teased by her older brothers, whom she adored. Though separated by 18 years, Karen and older sister Phyllis developed a "best friends" bond that lasted their entire lives. Growing up, Karen loved baking with mom and getting tractor rides from dad. Her two greatest loves, however, were music and Jim O'Neall. Jim and Karen dated exclusively throughout high school, though Karen did once accept a ride on the back of a classmate's motorcycle—a point of jealousy for Jim to this day. After graduating from Plover High School, Karen attended Buena Vista University, where she earned a BA in Fine Arts. In August of 1959 she married James O'Neall in the Methodist Church, Plover, Iowa. Her first teaching contract, in the fall of 1959, was with Graettinger High School, but after one year she and Jim moved to Pocahontas, where they raised a family of four "occasionally ornery but mostly good" kids. Family vacations were always fun, interesting and off the beaten path—sometimes by many miles thanks to her husband's disregard for maps. Karen taught elementary music for the PAC school district for 38 years, retiring in 2000. During that time, she fostered the love of music in a countless number of kids—most of whom could still clap out a perfect "ta ta tee tee ta" if asked. A talented singer herself, Karen was a member of the community chorus for several years and fondly remembered playing the role of Marion the Librarian in the group's performance of The Music Man. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Pocahontas, where she served as choir director, organist, Elder and member of the UPW. She was also a member of NEA, ISEA, the local PEA, the Fort Dodge branch of the Orff Society and A.H.T.T.T. Karen was preceded in death by her brothers Harlan (Bud), Keith and Robert Horsman, and her sister Phyllis Sellers. She is survived by her husband Jim and their four adult children, Shawn (Bre) of Wylie TX, Barry (Kathleen) of Orland Park, IL, Chad (Holly) Des Moines, IA and Jennifer O’Neall of Wylie, TX, as well as 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
