Kari Bendikson was born January 12, 1845, at Vangsness, Sogn, Norway. Here she was baptized, received her first Christian Training and was confirmed. At the age of 19 she emigrated to this country and came to St. Ansgar, Iowa, at which place she worked for about 5 years. In 1869 she was united in marriage to Samuel Severson. This union was blessed with 12 children, 10 of whom are living. They settled on a farm at Adams, Minn., where they lived about 13 years. In 1882 she moved with her family to North Dakota and settled on a preemption in Latona Twp., this county. Here they lived 4 years, after which they homesteaded on a farm in Sec. 1 Latona Twp., where they lived about 12 years. In 1898 they bought a farm in Sec. 33 Vesta Twp., which place remained her home until her death. Mrs. Severson was one of the pioneers of this county and gave to it the major part of her life's struggles in building up a commonwealth. In 1911 she suffered the loss of her husband who died at Los Angeles, Calif., where he had gone for his health. Mrs. Severson was always interested in church work. She was a member of the Hoff Lutheran Congregation. She also showed a keen interest in organizing the first Ladies' Aid of the congregation, being one of the charter members. She was blessed with good health, but has been troubled with rheumatism for the last 20 years. About 3 years ago she took sick with heart trouble. She received treatment and seemed to improve although at times the old trouble bothered her. This winter she has been fairly well until about 2 weeks ago she took sick with the flu, which developed into pneumonia. She died March 12, 1926, at the age of 81 years and 2 months. She leaves to mourn her loss: 5 sons, Sever Severson of the state of Washington, Benny Severson at home, Carl Severson, Tioga, N.D., Henry Severson, Minot, N.D. and Johnny Severson, Chinook, Mont.; 5 daughters: Mrs. J.A. Bartell, Van Hook, N.D., Mrs. Syver Starkson, Fordville, N.D., Mrs. Ed Erickson, Fordville, N.D., Mrs. Albert Thorvilson, Kalispell, Mont., and Mrs. Lewis Sanderson, and 27 grandchildren. To them the many friends extend their heartfelt sympathy. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, her pastor, Rev. Alfred Breivik officiating. Devotion was held at the Hoff Church at 1:30. A great number of people turned out to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased, who was well known, having lived in that community 44 years. All her children were present with the exception of one son, Sever. Interment was made in the Quale Lutheran Cemetery 9 miles west of Fordville. -------------------- Kari had two sisters and one brother. Her two sisters were both named Anna. The one died of Leprosy and was in a hospital. The other Anna was Mrs. Barlow. Her brother's name was Gutorm, which was later changed to George. Kari was seventeen years when she came to this country. She got jobs and learned to speak some English, but she decided she would go to school. She went for one day, but then her sister's husband died in a snow storm which left her sister, Anna, with several children and she was pregnant, so Kari left school to stay with Anna. Anna came for a visit after Kari and Sam moved to Adams. She came to see her daughter, Andrina, who came earlier and was a dressmaker in Park River. Andrina had met and married a widower, Jim Martin, who had a small boy. They lived in Park River for some time. They had three children and came to visit Kari often. Clara worked for them for a while. Later they moved to Washington. Kari died in 1926 and was buried in Quale Cemetery near Fordville, North Dakota.
