He was 67 years old and had been in poor health for some time past. He went to California only a few weeks ago thinking the change of climate would be beneficial in gaining his health. Notwithstanding these conditions his death was sudden and came as a shock to his wide circle of relatives and friends. Deceased was born in Norway in 1844, being the fourth member of a family of ten children; he immigrated to America in 1861 and located near Madison, Wis. Two years later he moved to Minnesota and engaged in farming. In 1865 he enrolled and served in the civil war, and at the close of the war, he was married to Miss Carrie Benson of St. Ansgar, Iowa. To this union twelve children were born, ten of whom living to survive him. In 1882 Mr. Severson and family moved from their Minnesota farm to Latona township, in this county and located on a homestead. Some time later he bought the farm which is the present home of the family in Norton township. A widow, four brothers and two sisters, five sons, Severt, Carl, Ben, John and Henry; five daughters, Mrs. Andrew Starkson, Mrs. Ed. Erickson, Mrs. A. Thorvilson and the Misses Sena and Alma, mourn his untimely departure. The funeral services were held last Sunday from the Qualey Lutheran church, of which Mr. Severson was a member, Rev Silseth officiating. The entire community joins in extending sincere sympathy to the surviving relatives. ------------------------ From the "Family History of Samuel and Kari Severson" compiled by Carrie Haugen and Esther McKinnon, 1968; updated 1980: Parents were Sjur (or Suiert) Bergglum Olsen; born 1804 (American Record 1810)- died 1870; and Selone (Zellone) Halvardsdatter; born 1813 (American Record 1810)l-died 1896. Lived in Vangsness which is the Balestrand Church District. Samuel and Kari first farmed in the area of Lyle, Adams, and Taopi, Minnesota. Their first child, Bertha, was born here. The cemetery where our great grandfather is buried is close to Taopi. Alma went there, but she could not locate the grave. In 1882 Samuel and Kari settled with their family in Latona Township, Walsh County, in North Dakota. They built a sod house and lived there for twelve years. Klara was a baby when they came there. Henry, Johnny, Dena, and Alma were born here. There were no doctors or hospitals. Kari delivered many babies. A young nurse from Norway came into the neighborhood and married a widower with a large family. She got the job as mid-wife and delivered hundreds of babies. Her name was Mrs. Anna Halberg. She attended Alma when Arlene was born. In 1894 they left the homestead and moved down to a beautiful site by the river near Adams, North Dakota. Sam Severson served in the Civil War. He died in 1911 and was buried in Quale Cemetery near Fordville, North Dakota. Six brothers and two sisters came to America. Sam came to North Dakota in 1882. He lived on a pre-emption and later on a claim. Five successive crop failures and then grasshopper pests were experienced. Out of a group of pioneers who came to this section, only Mr. Bylin and Sam remained and saw the hard times through. There were hail, drought, and cutworms until 1891 when the first good year was enjoyed, and a gradual rising to presperity enjoyed. The year 1891 was a winter of heavy snow. They walked through a tunnel from the house to the barn. In that summer they hauled wheat with oxen to Michigan City, 25 miles distant, to get 35 cents per bushel.
