Stewart, Ledgard B. Hakes Jr., F. C. Gilchrist Jr. and C. A. Wessman as pallbearers. Services were also held last Wednesday in Chicago, where Mr. Hakes had made his home for many years. Born in Laurens Karl Montague Hakes was born July 17, 1889, at Laurens. He was the son of the late Montague and Harriett Hakes of Laurens, who were Iowa pioneers. He was graduated from Laurens high school, and from Drake university of Des Molnes. At the age of 17 he went to Europe to study music and was a pupil of the famed pianist, Leopold Godowsky. He returned to Europe on two other occasions, at which times he studied with Ignatz Friedmann and Josef Lehvlnne in Berlin. Later in America he was with the celebrated pianist and teacher, Egon Petrl. Studios in Chicago In 1909 Mr. Hakes went to Chicago where he studied and taught, maintaining piano studios for more than 30 years in the Fine Arts building. He was well known in musical and critical circles where he was admired and respected for his broad knowledge and high artistic standards. He was an intimate friend and confidant of many well-known artists who frequently sought and heeded his counsel. Survivors include two brothers, Ledgard B. Hakes of Laurens and L. Paul Hakes of Omaha, Nebr. Another brother, Byron Arnold Hakes, died in June, 1947.
