Burial was in the Laurens cemetery with members of Larimer-McCabe post, the American Legion, in charge of a service at the grave. Born in Laurens Ledgard B. Hakes, son of the late Montague and Harriet Hakes, was born June 24, 1894, in Laurens. He attended the Laurens schools, the Northwestern Military Academy and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. On May 15, 1917, shortly after the outbreak of World War I, he enlisted in the First Reserve Officers Training Corps at Fort Sheridan, Ill., where he received his commission as second lieutenant of infantry Nov; 15, 1917. He sailed for Europe Jan. 4, 1918, and first served with the 11th Division of the British Army and a regiment of New Zealanders. In July he was assigned to the 58th Infantry of the 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces in France. He participated in the Meuse-Argonne offensive and on Oct. 6, 1918, was severely wounded while engaged with his regiment in the Argonne forest. For many months he was hospitalized in France and later in the United States, and finally returned to his home in August, 1919. He was awarded the Order of the Purple Heart by the U. S. government soon after his return from Europe. Store Owner Mr. Hakes later resumed business with his father in the Hakes general store in Laurens. Upon his father's death he became owner of this store, and operated it thereafter under the name of M. Hakes and Sons. He was interested also in the wholesale grocery firm of M. & J. R. Hakes. On June 28, 1922, he was united in marriage to Frances Gilchrist. They were the parents of two children, a son and a daughter. Mr. Hakes was active in many of the veterans organizations including the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was interested in civic and community affairs, and served on both the Laurens town council and the school board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Laurens, the Consistory and the Shrine. Survivors Mr. Hakes was the last surviving member of his immediate family, his parents and his three brothers, Arnold, Karl and Paul, having preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Eloise (Mrs. C. B.) Stewart; his son, Ledgard B. Hakes Jr.; and two grandchildren, Robert and Craig Stewart.
