Description	:	STANLEY (Special)—Our community lost one of its respected citizens in the death of Mrs. Alta Bird at the People's hospital of Independence on Aug. 16. 1945 Kate Alta Powers, daughter of Henry and Livona Powers, was born in Scott township, Fayette County, la., on Feb. 19. 1864. On Dec. 25, 1883 she was married to Horace W. Bird. They established their home on a farm and there she ably performed her duties for 29 years. On Dec. 25, 1883 she was married to Horace W. Bird. They established their home on a farm and there she ably performed her duties for 29 years. They moved to Stanley in 1912. where she has since made her home. Her companion of almost 55 years died Dec. 4, 1938. They vere the parents of three children, Mrs. Ethel Hardy of Independence, lA. Frank V. Bird of Beloit. Wis. and George W. Bird of Charles City. lA. She was one of a family of seven children, four of whom preceded her in death. Two sisters, Mrs. Millie Lincoln of Oelwein and Mrs. Hattie Enes of St. Petersburg. Fla. together with eight grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren survive. One granddaughter, Marian Bird, also preceded her in death. Two uncles. Wallie Powers of Maynard and Walter Powers of West Union, many other relatives and a host of friends mourn her passing. Two of her grandchildren are now in the service of their coun- Shortly after moving to Stanley, she united with the Union church of Stanley and took much pleasure in the work of her church. She was a member of the Sunday school and ladies' aid and gave untiring service to the church and all its interest. Her home was filled with whole-hearted hospitality and through a genial and responsive manner her many friends enjoyed this, pleasure. She was a long time member of the Royal Neighbor lodge of Stanlev. As a devoted mother, a thoughtful neighbor, and faithful friend, she endeared herself to a wide circle that now mourn the loss of her-companionship. Funeral services were held from the Union church Sunday afternoon. Rev. Geo. Thomas of Camanche, a former pastor of the Union church, officiating. Mrs. Elmer Morgan and George- Hill sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thot" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." They were accompanied on the piano by Miss Mable Campbell. Casket bearers were W. H. Morgan, H. S. Brownell, N. P. Stimson. C. O. Wharram, N. G. Maley and O. J. Rummel. Interment was in the Stanley cemetery.
