After a lingering illness she passed away September 2, 1965, in a hospital at Panorama City, Cal., at the age of 81. As a girl she came with her family by covered wagon to Fillmore county and settled in Grafton where she lived until 1945. She then moved to California where she has since resided. She was united in marriage to James David Smith of Grafton June 27, 1907. To this union were born 11 children. Her husband and four children preceded her in death, two children in infancy and Mrs. Alleen Sole of Nelson and James Edgar Smith of Willmington, Cal. She leaves to mourn her departure six daughters; Mrs. Velma Paulson of Venice, Cal., Mrs. Helen Bivens of Walnut, Ia., Mrs. Ellen Phiefer of Willmington, Cal., Mrs. Hazel Cudaback of York, Mrs. Wilma Bealieu of Canoga Park, Cal., and Mrs. Betty Bastian of Kansas City, Mo.; one son, Llyod Smith of Fairmont; 29 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, three sisters, Frances of Mason City, Ia., Lucy of Loveland, Col., Mae of McCook, and a host of friends and neighbors. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. September 6, 1965, at the Federated church in Fairmont. Rev. Stewart Maynard officiated. Mrs. Rex Plock, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Jerry Galusha, sang "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen" and "Beyond the Sunset." Interment was in the Grafton cemetery. Pallbearers were Allen Sole, Lloyd Sole, Wayne Bivens, Dwight Beulieu, Glen Cudaback and James Bastian.
