Mossman, was born in Delaware county July 19, 1871, the daughter of John and Mary Chrystal. After graduation from Lenox College, she taught in Iowa schools and later in Minnesota. Her last school was Bryant Junior high in Minneapolis where she taught mathematics and a room of difficult children. Following retirement she continued Red Cross and church work, especially tutoring disabled veterans and helping Chinese with English and citizenship preparation. She died April 23 in Minneapolis where memorial services were held. She was buried in the family lot at the Golden cemetery near Ryan. One brother, John Chrystal of Huron, SD; her nieces, Thelma Herzog and Helen R. Jackson and a nephew, James L. Jackson, survive her. Ref: The Lakewood Cem. indicates that Kathryn Mossman was cremated and remains sent back to the funeral home. J. F. Mossman couldn't be found but a Pearl A. Mossman d. 15 Jun. 1899, 28 yrs. was found buried with Kathryn. I suspect that Pearl A. Mossman is a sister of James Frank as she is the same age as Catherine; however she could have been wife #1. Ref: Ms. Herzog, 1994, said that Kathryn Mossman was quite secretive. She seemed to resent John E. Chrystal, her brother saying "he got the best education in the family". When she died she left money to Jim and Helen but none to the Chrystal family. Jim said that she was buried in Lakewood Cem. Uncle Frank may have been previously married. Aunt Kathryn was divorced from Frank. Aunt Anna may have taught school but never married. As a child Ms. Herzog writes that she thought Anna was odd -- but who knows -- I may be in the same class. Ref: Ms. Mossman encouraged me in the early days of this venture. I only wish that I had started my correspondence with her much earlier. Ref: Grandfather Charles J. Orr said that James Mossman was a good baseball player and loved to play the game, probably would have been a professional if he had lived at a later time. Nothing more in known of Mr. Mossman.
