In 1867 she came with her parents to Osage, where she resided until her marriage in 1870 to Lorenz Helfter. Read More	Mrs. John Glassner Pioneer Mother of This County, Dead Katherine Stoeckel was born in Lancaster, New York, May 19, 1853, and died at Osage, Iowa, December 23, 1931, closing a long life of useful labor and self sacrifice, at the age of 78 years. In 1867 she came with her parents to Osage, where she resided until her marriage in 1870 to Lorenz Helfter. They made their home on a farm two miles north of New Haven, where their three children, George, Lorenz, and Mary, were born. Her husband, a veteran of the Civil War, died in 1876 of disease developing from exposure, having spent many months in a Confederate prison during the war. In 1878 she was married to Matthew Martin, and to them four children were born. After their marriage they made their home for a time in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. During their residence there the city was stricken with black diphtheria, and four of her children were taken, leaving only the eldest son and an infant daughter of her family of six children. In 1885 she was again bereft of her husband, and in 1896 she returned with her children to Osage to make a home with her brother, John Stoeckel, bringing with her, her motherless granddaughter, Gertrude Helfter, whom she raised. [After Clara Glassner died, Katherine] was married to John Glassner, and they have spent nearly twenty-five years of comfort and companionship, residing on a farm two miles south of Osage until 1918, when they retired, and have made their home in Osage since that time. She leaves, besides her bereaved husband, her son, George Helfter, two daughters: Mrs. Eli Grandpre, of Turton South Dakota, and Mrs. Arthur Grandpre, of Doland, South Dakota; two brothers: John Stoeckel, of Mora, Minnesota, and Joseph of Nebraska City, Nebraska; and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Melvin, of Retsil, Washington; also three step-sons: Michael Glassner, Stanley, Wisconsin; John, of Kirkland, Arizona, and Isadore, of Livingston, Montana. There are seventeen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. This gentle pioneer mother will live long in the memory of a large circle of friends and neighbors whose lives have been touched by her example of humility and patience, and who have enjoyed her cheerful hospitality. She was always a devout member of the Catholic church. The funeral was held at Sacred Heart Church, Revered Father Ferring officiating, and interment made in the Osage Catholic Cemetery.
