Pat and her husband Dick lived at Trail Ridge Retirement Center for many years; most recently, Pat was in hospice care at Bethany Homes. She had previously been a resident in Dow Rummel Village's assisted living apartments, where she had been living since February 2013. Pat was born to Lillian and Gerald Lynch of Sioux Falls on February 5, 1930. She grew up in Sioux Falls and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1948. She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company's Sioux Falls office as an operator and in the company's directory sales division. In 1954, Pat married fellow phone company employee, Dick (Richard L.) Hicks. The couple lived briefly in Huron, where their son Bob was born, then resided in Rapid City for ten years, where son Greg and daughter Lynn were born. Pat was active in the Rapid City Junior Chamber of Commerce and PTA, and was the coolest Cub Scout Den Mother ever. In 1966 Pat and family moved to Sioux Falls, following Dick's promotion to an upper management position with Northwestern Bell. Pat worked part-time for several years at Nelson's Concessions. As a mom, Pat was kind, patient, generous, supportive and good-humored. Her incredible fortitude and devotion made it possible for Dick, who had multiple sclerosis, to become a leading advocate for the disabled community locally and statewide. Pat played a key role in the Youth Leadership Forum, which enables young adults who have a disability to learn from each other and from successful adults with disabilities who are recognized leaders and role models. She also co-edited Focus For Abilities, a statewide newsletter on disability issues. Pat was an intrepid traveler; she and Dick visited more than 110 countries over a span of 20 years. She had a knack for drawing, and later took up oil painting. Pat is survived by son Bob and his wife Annette (St. Paul, MN) son Greg (Sioux Falls), daughter Lynn Eilts and her husband John (Hawarden, IA), grandson Blaine (Valley Springs) and his wife Amy, granddaughter Ashlyn (Hawarden, IA), sister Colleen Zuraff, and brothers Dick, Chuck, Mike, Steve and Terry. She was preceded in death by husband Dick (2007), by her parents, brothers Jerry and Jim and sisters Marilyn Anton and Elaine Kirk. Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities, Multiple Sclerosis Society, or Union Gospel Mission of Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 12 pm with the family present from 5 to 7 pm and a prayer service beginning at 6 pm on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the Miller West Funeral Chapel, 6200 West 41st Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Christ the King Catholic Church with burial at Hills of Rest Memorial Park.
