Description	:	OBITUARY - Kathryn Elizabeth (Hekkel) Miller, 100, of Froid, more recently of the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston, N.D., died at the home Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014. She was born Jan. 17, 1914, to German Russian immigrants Gottlieb and Anna Hekkel, southwest of Froid on the Gottlieb Schledewitz farm. She was the oldest of 11 children. Read More	OBITUARY - Kathryn Elizabeth (Hekkel) Miller, 100, of Froid, more recently of the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston, N.D., died at the home Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014. She was born Jan. 17, 1914, to German Russian immigrants Gottlieb and Anna Hekkel, southwest of Froid on the Gottlieb Schledewitz farm. She was the oldest of 11 children. She grew up among German-speaking families in the area along with their German customs. She helped her father out on her parents’ farm at an early age by plowing, raking hay, picking rock, threshing and many other farm chores. She also helped her mother in the house by baking, cooking, sewing and caring for her younger brother and sisters. She was baptized and confirmed at the Friedens Gemeinde church at rural Froid. She attended Dam School #5, walking three miles each way to school until she was 16, and then left home to make way for more siblings. She worked at the Froid Hotel and at Chet’s Cafe in Culbertson, waitressing, baking, making beds and any other duties that came along. She also worked for various Froid area ladies helping out after the birth of a child. She always went back to her parents’ farm and worked, especially during harvest time. On Christmas Day 1945, she married John D. Miller, who was a Froid area farmer, at the Catholic church in Culbertson. She enjoyed living on the farm where she raised one daughter, Ramona, and two sons, Timothy and Loren. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic church in Froid and was involved with the altar society of that church. She was an excellent cook and seamstress. She worked at the Froid School lunchroom when needed. She was an excellent cook and shared many German-style meals with her family. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She also enjoyed quilting at the Froid Lutheran Church and at St. Josephs Catholic church in Williston, N.D. Her husband died in 1997 and in 1998 she moved to Williston next door to her son. In 2006, she became a resident of Bethel Lutheran nursing home in Williston. She always said she was going to live to be 100, and she did. She is survived by her daughter, Ramona Stout of Manhattan; sons, Timothy Miller of Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., and Loren Miller of Williston, N.D.; four grandchildren; brother, Clarence Hekkel of Billings; and sister, Adeline Rasmussen of Helena. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; brothers, Gottlieb Jr., Bennie, Pete, Dave, Edward and Richard; and sisters, Pauline Engleman and Othelia Schulz. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Dec. 16, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Culbertson. Burial was in the Froid South Cemetery.
