Dick died Saturday evening, Nov. 10, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. The ninth of 11 children, Dick was born Feb. 16, 1930, in Froid, to Gottlieb and Anna (Brese) Hekkel. Dick grew up on the family farm and graduated from Froid High School in 1948. He enlisted in the Army in 1952. While in the service, he served in Germany as an interpreter and corporal. In 1954, he was honorably discharged. In 1955, he moved to Anaconda and on June 2, 1956, he married Evelyn Kriskovich; together they were blessed with seven children. Dick enjoyed working in the auto industry throughout his life. He began his career as an apprentice mechanic in Froid. In Anaconda, Dick worked at Anaconda Motor Co. and then for 29 years at Young Motors/Tony Quick Inc. as the service manager. Folks drove their cars from miles around to let him look underneath the hood. After his retirement from the auto industry, Dick was recruited to work at the Anaconda Police Station as a juvenile detention caretaker. Much to his surprise, he never had to care for any of his children or grandchildren while on duty. In his earlier years, Dick served as an alderman for the City of Anaconda. Dick was grand knight for the Knights of Columbus and was active in the Anaconda Catholic Community. Dick's true love was being a cowboy. He was proud of his bareback riding ability and loved to share his stories with his grandchildren. Dick enjoyed summer vacations, especially when he could bring his family back to the "homeland" to show them where he grew up. Trust us, getting there was half the fun. He also enjoyed an "after-shifter" at the end of a hard day's work, Copenhagen, a nice pair of cowboy boots, the harmonica, a fine tuned Cadillac, and the Atlanta Braves. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Evie Hekkel; daughters and spouses, DeeAnn and Frank Hubert, Carol and Terry Mickey, Sheila and Ron Verlanic, Nancy and Kyle Moquist, Janet and Kevin Fuller; son, John and Steph Hekkel; grandchildren, Marcie (Jim) Maes, Kyle and Chelsie Moquist, Chad and Tyler Verlanic, Shannon and Erin Mickey, Joe and Teah Fuller, Vatore and Thomas Hekkel; and two great-grandchildren on the way. He is also survived by his sisters, Kathryn Miller, Othelia Schulz and Adeline (Glen) Rasmussen; brothers, Peter (Lorena) Hekkel, Dave Hekkel, and Clare (Jeannie) Hekkel; sisters-in-law, Christine (Ira) Jensen, Mary (George) Tonkovich, Rosalie Kriskovich and Kathy (John) Bleile; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, John and Irene Kriskovich; brothers, Gottlieb, Benny, and Edward Hekkel; sisters, Pauline Engleman; in-laws, Louis and Theresa Kriskovich, Fred and Eileen Blodnick, John Miller, Ted Engleman, Emma Hekkel and Bob Schulz. Dad joins his first born, Thomas W. Hekkel, where they will forever rest in peace. Dick will be remembered for his "laid-back" nature, mechanical expertise and living his life how he wanted to live it. "Dad, we will always try to live by the values you instilled in us … honesty, a good work ethic, devotion to family and faith and sometimes most important, have fun. "Dad, we will always remember your words of wisdom, 'No matter where you go or what you do, someone will be watching you.' " Services are under the care of KT Riddle Funeral Homes, Anaconda.
