Description	:	Kathryn Harms, age 91, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry and Anna (Schipper) Johnson, on November 28, 1922, in rural Aplington. She attended Elenor Monroe #2 and #4 Country Schools. She became a member of Bethel Reformed Church in 1939. On January 25, 1945, Kathryn was united in marriage to John R. Harms at her parent's home. After their marriage, John completed his time in the Army. They were stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Kathryn worked as a housekeeper. Their first home back in Iowa was on a farm near Bristow. They then moved to rural Ackley, Iowa,... Read More	Kathryn Harms, age 91, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of Henry and Anna (Schipper) Johnson, on November 28, 1922, in rural Aplington. She attended Elenor Monroe #2 and #4 Country Schools. She became a member of Bethel Reformed Church in 1939. On January 25, 1945, Kathryn was united in marriage to John R. Harms at her parent's home. After their marriage, John completed his time in the Army. They were stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Kathryn worked as a housekeeper. Their first home back in Iowa was on a farm near Bristow. They then moved to rural Ackley, Iowa, where they farmed and raised their family. In the fall of 1981, John and Kathryn retired and moved to Aplington. Kathryn was a faithful member of Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley. She attended Ladies Aid where she served as president for many years. Kathryn taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a member of the adult choir as well as the ladies choir. She also was part of the Friendship Bible Study in Aplington. Kathryn was part of the "Get Off Your Rocker" exercise group, AMVETs Auxiliary and was a welcoming hostess to many, including several missionaries. Kathryn enjoyed cooking, sewing, and shopping, but her greatest joys were time spent with her family and babysitting her grandchildren. Kathryn passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Maple Manor Village in Aplington, of natural causes. She is preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Douglas Harms; two sisters, Johanna Kannegieter and Esther Spain; four brothers, Harm Johnson, John Johnson and Henry Johnson, and an infant brother, Gerald Johnson. Kathryn is survived by her husband of 69 years, John; four children, Duane (Diane) Harms of Shell Rock, Iowa, Eileen (Ron) Krusey of Ackley, Kevin (Barb) Harms of Ackley, and David (Janet) Harms of Independence, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lester (Martha) Johnson of Aplington; two sisters, Ann Reineke of Dike, Iowa, and Lois (Clyde) Glenn of St. Charles, Missouri; two brothers-in-law, Calvin Kannegieter of Aplington and John Spain of Parkersburg, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Fannie Meyer and Eileen Johnson, both of Parkersburg. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Washington Reformed Church with burial in Washington Reformed Cemetery, both in rural, Ackley, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington, and one hour before services at Washington Reformed Church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
