Description	:	John R Harms, age 94, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Remmer and Ida (Haan) Harms on December 17, 1919, rural Aplington. He attended country school near his home. John served in the United States Army from January 1, 1942, until he was honorably discharged on October 7, 1945, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, as a Staff Sergeant. He fought in the South Pacific, New Guiney and was stationed in Australia. On January 25, 1945, John was united in marriage with Kathryn Johnson at her parent’s home, rural Ackley. Read More	John R Harms, age 94, of Aplington, Iowa, was born the son of Remmer and Ida (Haan) Harms on December 17, 1919, rural Aplington. He attended country school near his home. John served in the United States Army from January 1, 1942, until he was honorably discharged on October 7, 1945, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, as a Staff Sergeant. He fought in the South Pacific, New Guiney and was stationed in Australia. On January 25, 1945, John was united in marriage with Kathryn Johnson at her parent’s home, rural Ackley. They started farming west of Bristow and then moved and farmed near Ackley. During this time he also loved working with horses and also raised dairy a dairy herd, cattle, hogs and chickens. The couple retired in 1981 and moved to Aplington. John was a faithful member of Washington Reformed Church rural Ackley, where he served as an elder, deacon and sang in the church choirs. John also was a member of the Kesley AMVETS and served as Commander of the Kesley Honor Guard. In 2010 John took a very memorable trip honoring Veteran’s for the WW II Honor Tour to Washington D.C. His greatest love was Katheryn, sharing 69 years of marriage together. One of John’s favorite pastimes was woodworking, especially making special gifts for his family. In his later years he enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and spending time with his family. John passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn on June 8, 2014; one grandson, Douglas Harms; one sister, Jennie (John) Schipper; and one brother, Henry (Alice) Harms; two brothers-in-law, Donald Janssen and Calvin Meyer. John is survived by four children, Duane (Diane) Harms of Shell Rock, Iowa, Eileen (Ron) Krusey of Ackley, Kevin (Barb) Harms of Ackley, and David (Janet) Harms of Independence, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond (Doris) Harms of Aplington, and Edward (Ann) Harms of Aplington; and two sisters, Fannie Meyer of Parkersburg, and Edna Janssen of Ackley. Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2014, at the Washington Reformed Church with burial in the Washington Reformed Cemetery both rural Ackley, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)346-1534, and one hour before services at the church.
