Kathryn Knutson was born January 10, 1921 to Sam and Alice Knutson in Lennox, SD. She spent her early years in rural South Dakota and graduated from high school in Inwood, IA. She then attended both Augustana College and South Dakota State University, graduating with a degree in Home Economics. Following graduation, she joined the Women’s Army Auxilliary Corps (W.A.A.C.) and received an honorable discharge in August of 1943. She met her husband, LeRoy Henning, while teaching Home Economics and other curriculum in Sacred Heart, Minnesota. They married on June 10, 1950 in Sioux Falls, SD and made their home in the following Minnesota cities: Spring Valley, Jeffers, New York Mills and Shoreview before settling in Claremont. Kathryn was a member of her local Auxiliary, American Legion, Commercial Club, Good Sams and various other social clubs. Her many hobbies included cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, bridge and reading. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and two sisters Lucille Aeilts and Mildred Thompson. Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation and lunch will begin at 12:00pm at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings.
