Cemetery at a private family graveside service that preceded the memorial service on Monday morning. She was born Jan. 13, 1921, the eldest child of Harold M. and Leona Ada (Woodward) Ford of Greensburg. She attended school in Greensburg, graduating in 1938. Following graduation, she attended Central Business College in Indianapolis for a short time and returned to her hometown working as a bookkeeper for the Charles H. Johnston Wholesale Grocers and later the Union Bank & Trust. In July of 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, Charles E. Schilling. They were married nine months when Charles was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. In 1942, her friend, Gertrude, talked her into accompanying her to visit her boyfriend at Camp Attaberry. There she met Virgil Fulwider from South Dakota and on Feb. 20, 1943, Kathryn and Virgil were united in marriage. This lasted for 62 years. She followed virgil to his many military assignments from Arizona to Georgia before he received orders to go overseas. Kathryn was pregnant and returned to Greensburg where on Feb. 3, 1945, their son James Allen was born. After the war, Virgil joined the family for a short time in Greensburg. Then they made a decision to go to Iona, South Dakota so Virgil could join with his father in the farming/ranching operation. In 1947, daughter Judith was born and the family was complete. Kathryn became a pioneer woman and worked as a homemaker and helpmate with Virgil. She took a job as a bookkeeper for Buche's for two and a half years and when Virgil retired from the ranch because of health concerns, they started to travel. They spent many winters in Marble Falls, TX with side trips to the southeastern US and points in between. Virgil passed away in 2005 and Kathryn continued to live on her own. In 2007, she moved to Council Bluffs to be with her daughter. She made her home at Bethany Lutheran Home where she resided until her death on Feb. 9 at the age of 89 years. She was one of the founders of the Friendly Neighbors club of Iona, a member of the Iona United Methodist Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary Burke Post 9950 of Burke, SD and was a 50 plus year member of Lois Chapter of OES, Greensburg. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading mysteries and visiting with the grandchildren and great-grandson. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Charles Schilling, her soul mate Virgil Fulwider, her brothers; William A. and Wilber W. Ford, and a nephew Robert H. Ford. Survivors are her son James A. Fulwider of Iona, SD, her daughter Judith (Phil) McCracken, of Iowa, grandchildren; Mary McCracken (Bo Hewitt) of SD, Sarah Anderson (David) of MN, and Daniel McCracken of IA, and a great-grandson Aaron Anderson of MN. Kathryn is also survived by a niece, Kathy Woodruff (Steve) of IN and two sisters-in-law Willa Ford and Sara Jean Ford of IN. Greensburg Daily News Friday, February 19, 2010
