Lin Jennewein officiating. Music was provided by Jean Moser, accompanist, and Geoff Smith, vocalist. Ilene Hickey and Eileen Drees were in charge of registration. Flower attendant was Barbara Fenenga. Flag holders were Richard Schaffer and Bo Hewitt, with Danielle Fulwider and Nick Stuckel playing taps. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, with Kotrba Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Virgil ("Bill" or "Billy") was born April 15, 1914 in Sioux City, Iowa to the late Benjamin Roberts and Ella (Lueders) Fulwider. After the death of his mother, when he was two years old, he was taken in by his paternal grandparents, J.A. and Sallie Fulwider, in Gregory. He graduated from Gregory High School n 1932. After graduation, he sought employment in Illinois and California and the CCC. He entered military service in 1941 and served as an officer in the Army Infantry in Italy. He met and was married to Kathryn Schilling on Feb. 20, 1943 in Greensburg. They have a son, James, and a daughter, Judith. He received an honorable discharge in 1946 and returned to South Dakota with his wife and son. He engaged in farming on the family farm a mile north of Iona and remained there until his health made it necessary for him to retire. Upon retirement, he turned the management of his farm over to his son, but still enjoyed observing and assisting with the farming operations. After retirement, Bill and Kathryn spent some time travelling; spending part of the winter months in Texas. They purchased a small home in Gregory. Bill was a quiet man who loved his family and his country; respected the land; had an interest in historical events; valued education; and involved himself in local civic affairs and his Iona United Methodist Church. He loved to spend time watching his granddaughters in their sport activities and always had an extra minute to spend with his grandson. Bill served on the Lyman County School Board, Lewis Districts; was a member of the Lewis Township Board; was involved in securing telephone service for Iona; was one of the original directors on the Tripp Co. Water Users District; was a life member VFW of Burke Post 9950; member of American Legion, Hutchison Post 6 of Gregory; and a 50 year member of the Gregory Lodge A.F. & A.M. 158. His health finally made it necessary for him to enter Rosebud Care Center where he resided for the last 1 1/2 years. He died peacefully surrounded by family at the Avera Gregory Healthcare Center on April 7. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, his son James, daughter Judy (Phil) McCracken of Council Bluffs, Iowa, grandchildren Mary McCracken of Texas, Sarah (David) Anderson of Minn., Daniel McCracken of Iowa and brother-in-law Bill (Willa) Ford of Greensburg.
