OBITUARY: Kathryn, known as "Sye" to her family and many friends, passed away quietly on January 22, 2021 in Virginia Beach, VA. She was born in Stony Creek, VA on July 4, 1924 to the late Harvey E. Poarch Jr. and Otis P. Harrison Poarch. She grew up in Stony Creek and graduated from the local school in 1941. In 1946, she graduated from Radford College with a BS in education. She returned home and taught at Stony Creek High School for five years. She took a year off from teaching to work in the retail market. During that year, she met a special midshipman, Bill Grigg. Sye and Bill were wed on May 31, 1952. They shared 64 years of marriage and had two children. She was a teacher in many public schools, including Ocean View Elementary School in Norfolk, VA. Sye furthered her education at James Madison University by earning an MD in education with a concentration in library science in 1979. She served as a public school librarian in Norfolk, VA at both junior and senior high schools, as well as Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, VA. She retired from her successful educational career in 1985. She was a life member of the Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a caring and charitable woman. Sye was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed; however, she will be remembered with much love. Her husband, Capt. William Hunter Grigg, USN, Ret. (Class of '50) predeceased her in 2016. She is survived by a nephew, Wade Hampton Goodwyn III and his wife, Mary; a daughter, Judie A. Grigg; a son, Dr. Jon Richard Grigg and his wife, Susan Aldish Grigg as well as their three children: Michael Taylor Grigg, William Hunter Grigg II and and Sarah Harrison Grigg Davenport with her husband, Cameron West Davenport. She is also survived by a great-grandson, Maclean West Davenport. Sye will be cremated and her ashes will be joined with those of her late husband. Their urn will be buried in the Grigg family section of the Emporia Cemetery in Emporia, VA. Arrangements are being handled by Altmeyer Funeral Home of Virginia Beach, VA. There will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity. NOTE: Virginia Birth Certificate indicates birth was in Dinwiddie County, VA; Virginia Certificate of Marriage indicates birth was in Stony Creek, Sussex County, Virginia.
