Read More	May 1915 (unknown paper) The angel of death has again visited us and taken from our midst one of the oldest settlers of Letcher, Mrs. Kate Morkin, whose death occurred Sunday, May 2nd, at half past one o'clock in the afternoon. Miss Catherine Welch was born in Garner, Iowa, January 16, 1872. During her childhood days she lived at Garner, Clear Lake, and Mason City, Iowa. At the age of eleven years she came to Letcher, S. D. She went back to Iowa, but in a short time she returned to keep house for her brother, Edward Welch, and had been a resident of Letcher ever since. She was married to Thomas Morkin in 1892, to which union were born nine children all of whom are living. The oldest one was 21 the day of her death and the youngest one was three years last December. They were all here to attend their mother's funeral. She died at the age of 42 years, 3 months and 16 days. She had been in very poor health for the past two or three years and had gone to different places for treatment but nothing could be done for her as she had heart trouble. She was a most patient sufferer during all her sickness for she never gave up courage, but was always pleasant and good natured and was always anxious to help anyone who was in trouble. She was devoted to her family and one who made friends with everyone. She was called at the last without a moments warning and without any suffering. She leaves to mourn her loss, a husband, nine children, three sisters, Mrs. Earl Wilds, Mrs. John Seward, and Mrs. Aggie Lester of Washington, two brothers, Will and Pete Welch of Letcher, besides other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral was held at the Catholic church of which she was a devoted member. Father McCormick officated.
