Mrs. German's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thiel, Sr., were one of the 17 Russian-German families who traveled from Nebraska to Walla Walla in a historic covered wagon train. Mrs. German's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thiel, Sr., were one of the 17 Russian-German families who traveled from Nebraska to Walla Walla in a historic covered wagon train. The Thiels took up their place about four miles from Ritzville, the farm now owned by Mike Thiel and farmed by his son, Lawrence, and there Katie was born on April 10, 1884. She was one of the very first white children born in the Ritzvlle area. The first, Nettie Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jared Harris, had been born two year before, on April 23, 1882. In later years. Mrs. German several times received prizes awarded at the Pioneer picnic to the oldest person who had been born in what later became Adams county. Mrs. German was married Dec. 9, 1902 on the same place she had been born, to Arthur German, whose family had arrived from Michigan in 1898. The couple farmed their until about 1911 when they moved to another place 12 miles northwest of Ritzville, the farm operated today by on of their sons, Joel German. There the Arthur German farmed until they retired to Ritzville in 1928. Mrs. German was survived by her husband at the home, and four sons, Joel H. of Ritzville; Harold of Bremerton, Wash.; Gilbert of Quincy, Wash., and Robert of Seattle. Nine grandchildren also survive as do two sisters, Miss Ruth Thiel of Spokane and Mrs. Will Schafer of Ritzville. Ritzville Journal Times December 17, 1953 Sue Gradner & gapwork90
