Both Irma and Leslie worked... Read More	POOL, KEITH ALLEN—Keith Allen Pool was born in Scottsbluff on November 16, 1928. He passed away on January 10, 2009, at the Exeter Care Center in Exeter at the age of 80 years, one month, and 24 days. He was the first of two children born to Leslie and Irma Pool. Keith had a baby sister, Mary Ann, who passed away when she was only three months old. Keith was 14 when she died. In 1934 the family moved to Geneva. Keith’s father started the café in town. Both Irma and Leslie worked long hours to keep customers happy. Keith was born with blood clots in his brain, which caused weakness to half of his muscles throughout his body. For example, he was unable to sit up on his own at the age of two, when other children were up and running around. He was unable to straighten his legs and he couldn’t walk on his own. To get himself around as a boy, he learned to use crutches and at times he would use his wagon. He would place his right leg in the wagon and push with his left leg. This is often how he got around the yard. When it was time for Keith to begin school, he was taught privately for two years because he was unable to climb the front steps leading to the school. When he decided to try public school, he had three older boys who would carry him up the steps every morning. In the fourth grade, Keith had surgery on his legs, which allowed him to walk better and get around a lot easier. Keith went on to do very well in school, as he was a member of the National Honor Society and he graduated from Geneva Public Schools in 1948. In 1944, Keith’s folks took over the Geneva Hotel. After graduating, Keith moved to Lincoln and worked at Goodwill, where he did a variety of jobs, such as electrical and janitorial work. He then moved to Virginia where he learned office skills, such as one-handed typing. In 1952, Keith moved back to Geneva to stay. He helped his folks run the hotel. His father passed away in 1964. Keith and Irma continued to run the hotel until they closed the doors in March of 1979. The Geneva Hotel was where the VFW is currently located. To backtrack a bit, in 1955, Keith began dispatching for REA of York. He dispatched out of his home, with the help of his mother, until December of 1994. Keith and his mother moved to Fairview Manor in 1999, after Keith had fallen at home. His mother was blind, so Keith was her caregiver at home. The two of them had been there for each other all those years, and Keith wasn’t about to allow anyone to split them apart. In 1998, Keith attended his 50-year class reunion. At the banquet, the class gave special recognition to Keith for his strong will and determination, stating that he had endured and defeated more challenges throughout his life than anyone could possibly imagine. When asking Keith about the recognition, his simply stated, “I never took the time to feel sorry for myself. I figured if I just look around; there is always someone worse off than me.” It’s thoughts and beliefs life these that allowed Keith to persevere and thrive in life. The last two years, Keith made his home at the Exeter Care Center. He passed away peacefully on January 10. Keith is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Irma; and his sister, Mary Ann. He is survived by a cousin and many close friends in the Geneva community. Services were held on January 13, at the Assembly of God Church in Geneva with Pastor Hugh Campbell officiating. Makala Bahr was the pianist and sang “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Blessed Assurance,” and “Amazing Grace.” Pallbearers for the service included Frank Heinisch, Matt Frey, Chet Frey, Aaron Monroe, Gerald Oswald, and Russ Knutzen.
