Keith Russell Newsom was born December 16, 1931 in North Bend, Nebraska to Henry J. and Ida (Nelson) Newsom, the last of their six children. He attended North Bend public schools, graduating from high school in 1949. He was a member of the Christian church in North Bend. He loved sports and music. He graduated in January 1954 from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the US Army. In the mid-1950s he served as a lieutenant in the field artillery. His active duty service took him to Fort Sill, OK, Germany (Munich), and Fort Ord, CA. Keith married Brigitte Foerderer November 24, 1955 in Munich. To this union were born three children---Sylvia (1956), Rob (1961), and Christine (1962). Keith married Josie Padilla Esquibel at Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1980s. During his college student days, Keith worked three summers (1949, 50, 51) as a carpenter at a trailer house manufacturing company in North Bend, one summer (1952) as an army reserve officer trainee at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, and one summer (1953) as an employee of the US Forest Service in northern Minnesota (Superior National Forest). Keith retired in 1996 with over 40 years of federal service---two years active duty as an army lieutenant, 13 years as a civilian oceanographer with the Naval Oceanographic Office in Suitland, Maryland, 23 years as a technical librarian (civilian) with the Air Force at Kirtland AFB near Albuquerque, and 2 years as a scientific & technical information officer (civilian) with the Strategic Air Command at Offutt AFB near Omaha. While with the Oceanographic office, Keith made a dozen or more scientific voyages to remote ocean areas, including three into Arctic seas. Two of these Arctic voyages were into the pack ice between Greenland and Svalbard (Spitsbergen). The other was into the Barents Sea north of Norway and the Soviet Union. With the Cold War escalating at the time, the Soviets took great interest in these Arctic expeditions, particularly the one into the Barents sea. They occasionally overflew the American icebreaker with Badger bombers and also tailed it with their own icebreaker throughout the entire operation. Two of Keith's fellow oceanographers were aboard the US Navy ship Pueblo off North Korea in 1968 when the North Koreans attacked that ship killing one crew member and then forcing the ship into a North Korean port. The North Koreans imprisoned (and mistreated) the entire crew and the two oceanographers for nearly a year. The Cold War could be very dangerous at times! Keith considered his graduation from the University of Nebraska to be his greatest personal achievement inasmuch as he did it all at a very young age without financial support from home or from any government agency. Later, during his working life, he also earned a Master's degree from the University of Maryland. Planting things was a hobby---he planted several hundred trees during his lifetime. He always had an interesting mix of weeds and wild flowers growing in his yard, a joy to him but an annoyance to home owner association officials and manicured lawn zealots. He also loved carpentry. He built several large storage buildings (sheds) and embarked on numerous home improvement projects, several of major proportions. The loss of his first wife to the genetic illness called Huntington's disease, his second wife to liver and diabetes complications, and his youngest daughter to Huntington's disease were tragedies he bore with a heavy heart. He spent many years as the primary care-giver to Brigitte, Josie and Christine. *** Keith's original wrote his above biography. I'm adding Keith's final life paragraph here. Although Keith spent many years away, his home state was Nebraska and his hometown was North Bend where he was raised. Keith's thoughts were "Go Huskers", "Go Tigers". I had the special privilege of corresponding with Keith many times and to honor him I will maintain his memorial. Sadly Keith passed on July 8, 2017 at the Kinston, Lenoir County North Carolina Veterans home. Keith was 85 years, 6 months, 22 days of age which does not include his last day, he lived a total of 31,251 days. No memorial service was planned, an informal service may have been held at a later date at North Bend, Dodge County Nebraska. Keith was cremated and his ashes were interred in the Woodland Cemetery next to those of his daughter Christine. Keith's information was provided from researching many resources and my memory. This biography was created as an honor to Keith by a friend Loren R. I believe all lives matter, even the lives of those who have passed.
