He passed on, while at home. He is survived by his wife; two sons; and two grandsons. Kelly was born and raised in Texas, near Dallas. He was born to Otis Walker McSpadden and Beatrice Redwine. He lived in Graham, Texas, and graduated from Jermyn High School. Soon after graduating from high school, he was inducted into the Navy, to serve during World War II. After basic training in San Diego, California, he was placed on the destroyer escort USS Lloyd, where he served throughout the South Pacific, as a communication signalman. During his service in the Pacific arena, his part of the fleet was targeted by the infamous, Japanese Kamikaze. As he told the story, at one particularly memorable moment, a Kamikaze plane flew so close, he could clearly see the face and eyes, of the doomed pilot. After the war, Kelly moved to Western Colorado, to work in the processing mill of the Union Carbide uranium mine, in Uravan, south of Grand Junction. He was a supervisor there. In early 1951, while having coffee in the Blue Swan cafe, on west Main St., in Grand Junction, Kelly met his soon to be wife, Geraldine Redfield. During their 60 plus year marriage, they had two sons: Stephen Kelly McSpadden, now in Denver, Colorado, and Kenneth "Kenny" Duane McSpadden of Evergreen, Colorado. Stephen lives with his life partner, Karen Thomas. Kenny and his partner, Pam Tanner, gave Kelly and Geri, their two beautiful grandsons: Zachary Kelly and Shane Tanner. For many years, Kelly loved to ride his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. He started, promoted and actively participated, in the Colorado West Goldwingers motorcycle club. He and Geri, rode through all 48 of the lower United States and all the provinces of Canada. His beautifully detailed bike and trailer, won several shows. While at home, he did wood working, enjoyed boating, fishing and made many trips to Lake Powell. The family made their first trip to Lake Powell, around 1963. Before retiring, he worked in construction, handling and moving the big equipment for road building. In late 2009, he and Geri, moved to Denver, to be closer to the families of their sons. A military memorial service and interment, will be held Friday, August 12, at 1:00 p.m., at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado. A memorial for family and friends, will be held at the Nazarene Church, at 2802 Patterson Rd., Saturday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m. Published in The Daily Sentinel from August 11 to August 12, 2011
