Moen, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa and formerly of Dunkerton, IA and Clinton, WI., died Friday, April 28, 2006 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah following a long illness. Kenneth Arnold Moen was born March 16, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of August E. and Marie (Bakke) Moen. He graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1942 and attended Luther College in Decorah. He joined the United States Marines in 1943. Ken received his training stateside and then worked as a radar technician on Johnson Island in the South Pacific, monitoring air currents and US and Japanese aircraft. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946 after three years of service. Ken was united in marriage with Virginia D. Barth on August 11, 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Locust. To this union, four children were born: Janmarie, Larry, Renee and Richard. Ken and Virginia farmed north of Decorah near Locust for twenty years. Ken then began working as the cooperative manager at Midland Coop in Decorah. He later transferred to the Midland Coop, later known as Land ‘O Lakes Coop in Dunkerton, Iowa and in Clinton, Wisconsin. He retired and the couple returned to Decorah in 1990. Ken was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Locust and was Sunday School superintendent for many years and a member of the church council. He was a current member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Ken also served as a Soil Conservation Commissioner. He was actively involved in his community and was a longtime member of the Luren Singing Society and a life member of VFW Post 1977 in Decorah. Ken was proud of his Norwegian heritage and spent time studying his family genealogy, tracing his family tree back to the 1600's. He and Virginia visited Norway three times in his life, and he was privileged to visit Valdres and the area where his grandfather was raised. The couple also spent fifteen winters in Yuma, Arizona enjoying the warm weather and spending time with family and friends. Ken loved to spend time with his grandchildren and especially enjoyed taking them camping. He was a talented woodworker and had made at least one keepsake piece of furniture for each of his children. He was fond of music, singing, playing golf, fishing and playing euchre with his friends. Ken will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Virginia of Decorah; his four children, Janmarie (Rocky) Olson of Yuma, AZ., Larry Moen and his fiancé Jennifer of Cedar Falls, IA., Renee (Delvin) Sommerlot of Dunkerton, IA., and Richard (Sharon) Moen of Watertown, WI.; ten grandchildren, Ryan Olson, Joshua Olson, Tasha (Brett) Jung, Travis (Kassie) Moen, Thomas Moen, Traci (Chad) Wolfensperger, Tyler (Amy) Moen, Tanner Moen, Zachary Sommerlot and Alysia Moen; five great-grandchildren, Chelsea Jung, Chad Jung, Ashlyn Moen, Hunter Moen and Lauren Wolfensperger; a sister, Elsie Rosendahl of Burr Oak, IA.; a brother, James (Sharon) Moen of Stoney Creek, NC.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Moen of Brouch Ville, Canada and a brother-in-law, Dale (Audrey) Barth of Decorah. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; John Moen and a brother-in-law, Mert Rosendahl. Burial with full military honors in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah.
