Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 27, 2007 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, by Rev. Marion Pruitt Miller, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 26 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church. Virginia Dorathy (Barth) Moen was born July 29, 1926 at home in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Frankie and Bessie (Bender) Barth. She was confirmed in the fall of 1940 at St John's Lutheran Church in Locust, Iowa. She graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1944 and attended nursing school in Rochester, MN. Virginia was united in marriage with Kenneth A. Moen on August 11, 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church. To this union, four children were born: Janmarie, Larry, Renee and Richard. Virginia and Ken also took in and raised Ken's brother, James. Virginia and Ken farmed north of Decorah near Locust for twenty years. Virginia had worked as a bookkeeper for Baker Lumber Yard in Decorah and for Standard Screen Print in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Ken's work took them to Dunkerton, Iowa and Clinton, Wisconsin. Following Ken's retirement the couple returned to Decorah in 1990. Virginia was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Locust, was a Sunday School teacher, sang in the church choir, and was a member of the church council. She was a current member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah and had been active in WELCA. Virginia was proud of her German heritage and considered herself a Norwegian by marriage. She spent time helping Ken research his family genealogy, tracing his family tree back to the 1600's. Virginia and Ken visited Norway three times, as well as traveling to France and Germany. The couple also spent fifteen winters in Yuma, Arizona enjoying the warm weather and spending time with family and friends. Virginia loved to spend time with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed taking them camping where she was well prepared for camping games and other activities. She was fond of music, singing, playing golf, playing bridge and playing Americana with her grandchildren. She was a very talented oil painter. She did volunteer work, and was a member of the Red Hat Society. Virginia will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her four children: Janmarie (Rocky) Olson of Yuma, AZ., Larry (Jennifer) Moen of Cedar Falls, IA., Renee (Delvin) Sommerlot of Dunkerton, IA., and Richard (Sharon) Moen of Watertown, WI.; fourteen grandchildren: Ryan Olson, Joshua Olson, Tasha (Brett) Jung, Travis (Kassie) Moen, Thomas Moen, Traci (Chad) Wolfensperger, Tyler (Amy) Moen, Tanner Moen, Zachary Sommerlot, Alysia (Zachary) Krueger, Dylan Briggs, Dalton Briggs, Joshua Briggs, and Justin Briggs; seven great-grandchildren, Chelsea Jung, Chad Jung, Ashlyn Moen, Hunter Moen, Lauren Wolfensperger, Kelli Moen and Xzavier Briggs ; one brother, Dale (Audrey) Barth of Decorah; and three sisters-in-law, Elsie Rosendahl of Burr Oak, IA, Sharon Moen of Stoney Creek, NC, and Margaret Moen of Brouch Ville, Canada. She was preceded in death by his parents; her husband Ken on April 28, 2006; and three brothers-in-law: James and John Moen and Mert Rosendahl.
