The following is an article by Zack Pluhacek published in the Lincoln Journal Star, May 29, 2010: Just as Mike Nagengast was saying his final words to his father Tuesday, a hospital staff member told him to go see his mother, who was in a bed two doors down. Nagengast left his dad's room, his mind filled with worries and memories, and walked past the nurses' station into his mom's room. Twenty minutes later, she took her own final breaths. Nagengast said the doctor at Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center told him it was shocking that both his parents, Kenneth and Dolores Nagengast, ages 75 and 72, died within such a short time period. "It was just like they were meant to be together," Nagengast said Friday. "They were just waiting on each other." Kenneth Nagengast, suffering complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, had been on life support for almost a week. But family members had life support removed Tuesday morning, after being told Nagengast would never be able to survive on his own. He was first hospitalized about five weeks ago. He improved enough to go to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital for about 1 1/2 weeks, but relapsed May 18 and was returned to Saint Elizabeth. "That night, I ended up taking my mom to the emergency room because she had a cough," Mike Nagengast said. She, too, was on life support until Tuesday, when doctors told Mike Nagengast his mother also could not live without it. Nagengast said that after his parents died, he met with a hospital priest. Then, he said, "I just went home. There was nothing else I could do. "It's strange. Everywhere I looked in the house reminds me of them." Mike Nagengast, 49, was his parents' caretaker in their later years. "I'm glad it happened this way," he said. "It would have been hard enough to bury one, then later on have to bury another." Today, the couple will be buried together at Calvary Cemetery after a funeral at their church, St. John's Catholic. Kenneth Nagengast, originally from Sidney, served in the Army during the Korean War. He met Dolores in Pittsburgh while stationed at a base in the area. The couple settled in Lincoln and raised their two sons, Mike and Mark. Mark, 52, was too sick himself to enter the hospital the day his parents died. Mike said his parents never had much money.His dad worked at a meat packing plant when he was younger, then worked as a custodian and security guard at Nebraska Bookstore, he said. Dolores Nagengast had polio when she was younger. "Her legs were never that strong," Mike Nagengast said. He remembers his parents always went on drives together on date nights. They'd stop for ice cream or go to Shopko, he said. Other days, they'd sit outside in a swinging chair. When they got older, they would go for rides around the neighborhood together in their motorized wheelchairs. "They did everything together," Mike Nagengast said. "They were meantto be with each other."
