Kenneth Howie died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 1997 at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was born Oct 3, 1920 at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, the son of Robert and Alice Deischer Howie. He graduated from the Monticello High School in 1939 and later attended Lenox College in Hopkinton. He married Margaret Siebels on Oct 6, 1943 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Anamosa. They farmed the Howie family Century Farm now operated by his son. Howie was a leader in both agriculture and community organizations, serving on the Jones County Board of Education, Monticello School Board, I.D.O.T. Planning Committee, Farmers Home Administration Board and was a Federal Land Bank Director, the Soil Conservation Board, ASCS Extension Council, the Farm Service Board, the Election Board, Township Trustee, and the Agriculture Property Rights Association. He had been an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church, Worshipful Master of Burns Lodge, Worthy Patron of Eastern Star, and the Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Diana (Daniel) Stadtmueller, and a son Michael (Cheryl) Howie, all of Monticello; two grandchildren, Deborah Stadtmueller Vince and her husband, Barry of Long Beach, Calif., Darren Stadtmueller, Monticello; a brother, Donald (Lucille) Howie of Rockville, MD, two sisters, Ruth (John) Morris of Washington, Janet Motsinger of Monticello, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Barbara, and a brother, Robert. A memorial fund has been established or a contribution can be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society
