Howie farm west of Monticello last Thursday afternoon, November 1, when he was accidentally killed. He was operating a corn picker attached to a tractor. The power take-off on the picker lacked the usual guard that is kept on such machines. Mr. Howie was probably adjusting the machinery when his jacket was whipped around the shaft of the power take-off. The whirling machinery pulled the clothes from his body and jerked them across his neck choking him to death. When he was found his body was pinned tightly with his back to the shaft, elbows extended. His body was found at 5 p.m. by his wife, when she went across the field to investigate the failure of her husband to return from work. Coroner J. J. Hayes was called and found that death was accidental, and no inquest was necessary. Mr. Howie had been dead for two hours. Were Picking Corn. It seems that Mr. Howie and his son Kenneth had started to pick corn Thursday afternoon. Mr. Howie had been ill and had remained indoors Thursday morning, but felt that with the fine weather he should start his corn picking. Kenneth Howie was driving a team and wagon hauling corn to the crib on each round that his father would make with the corn picker. The corn picker carries a bin, and this was dumped into the farm wagon. Kenneth noted that his father had stopped the corn picker on the far side of the field. His horses were restless and he had no immediate place to tie them, and he therefore waited for over an hour for his father to continue his work. Mrs. Howie then went across the field to investigate, and found her husband had been killed in the manner above described. Born In Castle Grove Robert J. Howie, 44 was born in Castle Grove township, October, 24, 1890. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Howie of Castle Grove township, and attended the rural schools near his home. He later graduated from the Monticello public schools, and for many years had been a successful farmer in Castle Grove township. He was married to Alice Deischer, April 6, 1916, and in addition to his widow is survived by four children, Ruth, Kenneth, Janet, and Donald. He is also survived by two brothers, Olin and Lynn Howie, both of Castle Grove township, and two sisters, Mrs. Merle Cass of Monticello and Mrs. Norman Bringard of Detroit. Funeral services for Mr. Howie were held at the First Presbyterian church in Monticello, last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, following a short service at the family home. Rev. Harry Kremers of Cedar Rapids, pastor of the Castle Grove Presbyterian church, was in charge of both services. The services at the church also included a prayer by Rev. Evans of Cedar Rapids. Howard solos, with Eugene Byers at the organ. The funeral was largely attended by many friends and relatives of Mr. Howie. Those in attendance at the funeral services for the late Robert Howie from out-of-town, were: Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bringard, of Detroit, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Rivenburg, Misses Lucy and Lulu Laude, of Greenfield; Dr. Peter Laude of Iowa City; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bradley, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Bradley, Roy and Esther Bradley, G. Seippel, Mrs. Eugene Laude, Miss Eva Tisserau, all of Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harms of Manchester; Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Harper of Vinton; Mrs. Howard Jackson and son, of Manhattan, Kansas; Mrs. Newell Gillilian of Hopkinton, and Mrs. Henry Pillard of Anamosa.
