Miller Rites Held Here Last Saturday Former Superintendent Succumbed at Rochester Following Long Illness Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church here for K.D. Miller, a resident of this city and a former superintendent of the La Porte City school, who died at Colonial hospital in Rochester, Minn. early last Wednesday evening following several years of declining health. Dr. J.F. Hutchinson, pastor of the Methodist church at Storm Lake, preached the funeral sermon, Rev. Oliver Jensen of the local Methodist church assisted with the service and eulogies were given by J.P. Street, Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction of Des Moines; C.T. Feelhaver, supt of schools at Ft. Dodge and Myron Olson, high school principal at Ft. Dodge. Mrs. Oliver Jensen, accompanied by Mrs. Cliff Burr, sang “Nearer My God To Thee” and “Abide With Me.” The casket bearers were Elmer Rasche, L.C. McGill, Ray Burrows, J.W. Kober, Jesse O. Kober and Don Olson. Interment was made in West View cemetery. Born in 1875 Kenneth Duane Miller, son of Elias Vandemark Miller and Elizabeth Barnard Miller was born March 18, 1875, at Morley, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He attended rural school and the Cornell college academy, Mt. Vernon, from which he graduated in 1900. He taught school and worked as a carpenter for a time. Later he entered Cornell college, from which he received his B.A. degree in 1905 and then did post graduate work at Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., and at the University of Chicago. Came Here in 1906 In 1905 he became principal of the Tama high school. The following year he came to La Porte City and remained four years as superintendent of the local school. While here, he married Viola Edith Smalley on June 10, 1908 at La Porte City. In 1910 he and Mrs. Miller moved to Monticello, where he was school superintendent for eight years. From 1918 to 1923 he was superintendent of the Vinton school and from 1923 to 1940 he held a similar position at Ft. Dodge, where he did much to improve the school curriculum and school system and also supervised an extensive building and remodeling program. Retired in 1940 In 1940 Mr. Miller retired and the following two years he and his wife toured the United States by automobile and trailer home. In 1942 he began serving as a supervisor of the southwest district of schools for the Iowa State Department of Public Instruction. He held this position for several years and during that time he and Mrs. Miller lived in their trailer home in Des Moines. After leaving Des Moines the Millers resided in their home on Main St. here except for some time spent on further tours throughout the country Since the latter part of September Mr. Miller had been in the Colonial hospital at Rochester receiving treatment. His wife and daughter were with him at the time of his death. Survivors He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. John Jensen of Chicago, two brothers, W.L. Miller of Anamosa and John H. Miller of Lisbon and one sister, Mrs. John Brokaw of Wheatland. Nine brothers and sisters have preceded him in death. Leading Educator Mr. Miller was one of the leading educators of the state and was widely-known throughout Iowa. He not only stressed advancement in education and thoroughness in teaching but also lace much emphasis on character building. He was a member of the Methodist church of Ft. Dodge, the Masonic lodge, the Kiwanis club, the Walt Whitman club, the National Education association and the Iowa State Teachers association. Relatives and friends attended the funeral from Des Moines, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Ft. Dodge, Marshalltown, Solon, Lone Tree, Wellman, Monroe, Martelle, Anamosa, Lisbon, Mt. Auburn, Wheatland, Vinton, Waterloo, Ames, Morley and Manchester, Iowa, and from Chicago, Ill. and Owatonna, Minn. All of his nieces and nephews living in Iowa attended the service.
