Description	:	Kenneth LeRoy Messman, the eldest child of Walter Milton Messman and Catherine Agnes Babst Messman, was born on a homestead near Rudyard, Montana, October 25, 1913. Read More	Kenneth LeRoy Messman, the eldest child of Walter Milton Messman and Catherine Agnes Babst Messman, was born on a homestead near Rudyard, Montana, October 25, 1913. He departed this life at the Health Care Center in Belleville, KS, March 3, 1993. Ken lived most of his early life in the Strang and Hebron area. He remembered those years on the "section," as he always called it, as times of happiness and of hardship. It is clear that they were also times of learning what it took to be a man. Ken's parents taught him by example to persevere, to be considerate of others, to do more than his share, to love building and growing and learning, and to leave a place better than he found it. On November 28, 1937, Ken married Zora Mae Norman. The couple spent most of their fifty-five years together in the Chester community where Ken was a retired bookkeeper and carpenter. Ken entered the U.S. Army late in World War II as a private, completed officer's candidate school, and eventually attained the rank of captain. He was a member of the Church of Christ, the Deshler VFW, and the Hubbell American Legion. Ken's dedication to his community was important to him. He had been a Boy Scout, a 4-H leader, volunteer fireman and served on both the village board and school board. Ken's family, though always came first. He and Zora Mae had four children and six grandchildren: Bill, Lincoln; Betty and George Cramton, Culver, KS., and their daughter, Leigh, Dayton, Ohio; Kathy and Kale Brokesh of Munden, KS, their children, Karla and Steve Dickerson of Salina, KS, and Karen, Lenexa, KS; and Karol and Don Wassom, Chester, and their children, Matt, of Crete and Kari and Andy of Chester. His pride in them always showed. He was an active and willing spectator at countless kid-centered events: ball games, graduations and recitals. "That Grandpa Messy," one three-year-old once said, "sure is a grandpa!" He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Dale and Gale. Four brothers and one sister survive him, Don, Bob and Dick all of Great Falls, Montana, Earl of Choteau, Montana, and Mae Thelen also of Great Falls. Other survivors include and uncle and two aunts, Leon and Wilma Messman, Aurora, and Amanda Babst, Great Falls, and a brother-in-law, J.D. Norman of York. Ken was always making something. Throughout his community are many reminders of the kind of person he was. Based on the experience of a lifetime, he signed his handiwork with quality and with love. He would want nothing more than to know that those of us who are left behind will learn from his example and carry on his work. Services were held Monday, March 8, 1993, 2:30 p.m. at the Community Bible Church, Chester, officated by Pastor John Schaeffel and Pastor Jim Woldhuis. Kenneth Hoge was soloist and Mrs. Frieda Truss, organist. Casket bearers were Harley Howell, Wallace Mulch, Ray Roland, Roy Willis, Harold Crouse and Reuben Schleifer. Honorary casket bearers were Dan Scoville, T.E. Boyer, Harold R. Porter, Dolan Frye, Earnest Dunn, Wilbert Crouse, James Wassom and Don Kasl. Graveside services were given by State Line Post No. 317 of the American Legion, Hubbell. Interment was in Chester Cemetery.
