Description	:	McALLEN, TEXAS - Kenneth R. Durstine, 86, formerly of Topeka, Kansas, passed away November 21, 2006 after a losing battle with cancer. Ken was born in Sabetha, Kansas, on July 13, 1920. He was the only child of Jacob R. Durstine and Mary McKinnie Durstine. He spent his early years in Sabetha, moved with his parents to a farm near Friona, Texas, and returned to graduate from Sabetha High School in 1938. Durstine, 86, formerly of Topeka, Kansas, passed away November 21, 2006 after a losing battle with cancer. Ken was born in Sabetha, Kansas, on July 13, 1920. He was the only child of Jacob R. Durstine and Mary McKinnie Durstine. He spent his early years in Sabetha, moved with his parents to a farm near Friona, Texas, and returned to graduate from Sabetha High School in 1938. He attended the University of Missouri at Columbia. Ken worked in California and Ohio prior to joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. During World War II he piloted a landing craft at the Normandy invasion and saw action in the Northern Pacific as well. Ken retired from active duty in the Navy in 1946 and served in the Naval Reserves. He was employed for 34 years in Topeka in the offices of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad from 1946 until he retired in 1980. In 1947 Ken married Helen Robohn of Burlington, Kansas. He and his father spent many hours during 1953 building a new home on the west edge of Topeka for his growing family. During the following years, Ken volunteered many hours at the Topeka Moose Lodge #555, which recognized him in 1999 for 50 years of continuous service. Ken received the Moose's highest honor, Pilgrim Degree, in 1964, and held numerous positions, including President of the Kansas State Moose Association from 1964-65. Ken and Helen loved to dance and were frequent attendees at the many Saturday night dances at the Topeka Moose Lodge. He was the regular Sunday night Bingo caller. Ken enjoyed being outdoors and always had a large vegetable garden while he lived in Topeka. He and Helen retired in 1980 and moved to McAllen, Texas, where they could enjoy warmer winter temperatures. Ken was an avid walker and would walk up to 8 miles a day. He cared for his car, lawn, and tomato patch until earlier this year. He enjoyed picking grapefruit and oranges off his backyard trees. Ken is survived by Helen, his wife of 59 years, and four children: David and his wife Tamara of Denver, Colorado; Ann and her husband Shane Miller and their son Michael of Ramona, California; Ken Jr. of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Lynn and her husband, Dan Weaver of Topeka and their son Scott of Washington, DC; seven step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren. Ken spent his last weeks at Comfort House, a hospice in McAllen, Texas, where he was treated with the utmost kindness and care. Comfort House receives no funding from insurance and is run entirely on donations. The family asks that memorial donations be made to Comfort House at 617 Dallas Avenue, McAllen, Texas, 78501, so that their ministry of love and compassion to the terminally ill may be continued. A memorial service will be held on December 2, 2006, at 10:00 am. at Virgil Wilson Funeral Home 800 N. Main McAllen, Texas. A funeral service will be held on December 16, at 1:00 p. m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church 4746 Southwest 21 St. Topeka, Kansas. Interment of ashes will be on December 17, 2006 at 2:00 p. m. at Sabetha Cemetery in Sabetha Kansas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Virgil Wilson Mortuary 800 N.
