Koster was born October 27, 1919, on the family farm near Breda, Iowa. He was the son of William and Matilda (Grabner) Koster. As a child he was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda, and graduated from St. Bernard's High School in Breda in 1937. Kermit served his country in the United States Army during World War II and participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe Campaigns. Decorations and citations included: American Defense Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Silver Battle Star, 4 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe, and Good Conduct Medal. He was also awarded Expert Marksman in pistol, rifle, and machine gun. On January 27, 1948, Kermit was united in marriage to Elsie Rose Wolterman at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda. Kermit was a farmer and livestock producer throughout his career and retired in 1984 in Lake View, Iowa with his beautiful wife, Elsie. Kermit especially enjoyed time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid baseball player and fan, and pitched for the Breda Eagles, the Lakes, and several other teams. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and carpentry. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda until moving to Wall Lake at which time he became a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wall Lake. Kermit was a member of the American Legion in Lake View. Kermit passed away Thursday, November 30, 2006, in Sioux City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; two children: Judith and Martin; his parents: William and Matilda; one sister Velma Blum; and four brothers: William Jr., Walter, Donald, and Doyle Koster. Survivors include his children: David Koster of Sac City, Janet Koster of Sioux City, Catherine Justice of Marion, Joseph Koster and wife Pat of Lake City, Raymond Koster and wife Lori of Wall Lake, Barbara Legler and husband Joe of Kansas City, MO, Rose Robeson and husband Tom of Centennial, CO, and Edward Koster and wife Shelly of Sioux City. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren: Beth (Steve) Roth, Jeremy Justice, Stacy, Brett and Brock Koster, Eric (Lindsey) Koster, Brian, Alex, and Melissa Koster, Joshua and Jenny Legler, and Andy and Katie Robeson; four great-grandchildren: Kayla Brengman, Stefani, Madeline, and Hallie Roth; two sisters: Ruth Heinrichs and husband Cletus and Maxine Heinrichs and husband Marvin; two brothers: Roger Koster and wife Darlene and LeRoy Koster and wife Joanell; many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends.
