Kristine Elsie Clefisch Mewhirter was born October 22, 1953, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth and Katherine Yohe Clefisch. She was raised on the family farm in Clayton Township and attended the Garnavillo Community Schools, graduating from high school in 1971. In the fall of 1971, Kristine enrolled at Wartburg College in Waverly, and received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration and accounting in May, 1975. She then held various employment positions in the Des Moines area, and at the time of her death, was serving as a financial consultant for Agri Industries of West Des Moines, Iowa. January 10, 1976, Kristine was joined in marriage with James Mewhirter. Two children were born to the marriage, Jill Elizabeth and Kyle J. Kristine's marriage was dissolved in 1986. She and her children resided at the family home in West Des Moines until her death, Monday, Sept. 22, 1986. She was a member of the Windsor Heights Lutheran Church in Windsor Heights, Iowa. Kristine served in several charities with her church, including the teaching of Sunday School. Kristine is survived by her children, Jill and Kyle; her parents; and two brothers, Kenneth Jr. of Hamill, S.D., and Kevin of Garnavillo.
