Time named her Miss Television, the outstanding female performer on TV that year and Milton Berle, Mr. Television. She was one of the first women to have her own her own network program, appearing in a show called For Your Pleasure on NBC. Her show was a forerunner to variety and talk programs. In television's early years she appeared frequently on other programs, such as the Ed Sullivan Show and was a co-host on the Today show. She was also a stage actress, appearing on Broadway. She portrayed musical and comedy roles in the Broadway productions of Park Avenue, Make Mine Manhattan, in which she co-starred with Sid Caesar, and in Kurt Weill's One Touch of Venus. She starred in many national touring companies, most notably as Nellie Forbush in South Pacific. She was known for what the Times called her "true and clear" mezzo soprano, and she performed as a nightclub and cabaret singer. She appeared in two films That Hagen Girl in 1947 and Taxi in 1953. She studied voice at the Ward Belmont School in Nashville, Tennessee. After receiving a full scholarship to study music and voice at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Recovering from the disease were some of the most difficult years in her life. She moved to New York City during the Second World War and began modeling for the Harry Conover Agency. Her career on the stage and television followed.
