Description	:	L. Bliss McFarlin was born to Addie and William E. McFarlin, March 17th, 1884, in Viola, Iowa,and at age 21 moved with his parents, his brother Lee, his sister Grace, to Williams county where they homesteaded five miles southwest of Ray in Equality township. They were members of the Methodist Church. Bliss was one of the first Schoolteachers in Ray, and later went into the banking business in Ray where he was associated with both the Farmers Bank of Ray and Linwell's State Bank for a period of 17 years, 1909-1926. They were members of the Methodist Church. Bliss was one of the first Schoolteachers in Ray, and later went into the banking business in Ray where he was associated with both the Farmers Bank of Ray and Linwell's State Bank for a period of 17 years, 1909-1926. He then went to work for Northwestern National Life Insurance Company of Minneapolis as field representive for their mortgage - loan department. Other business interest included the Bijou Theatre, The Ray Pioneer Newspaper, farming and rental properties. On May 12,1913, Bliss was married to Florence M Rutledge of Williston. They had six children, Donald, died at the age of one day. Florence Kathlyn, and Betty Jo died during the scarlet fever epidemic of 1921., Leslie B, Minot., Bill E., Williston, and Donna (Mrs.Joseph H.)Neville ,Casper, Wyoming are deceased. Williams County has danced to "McFarlin Music"for many years. First, Bliss McFarlin, a violinist, formed an orchestra with Mrs. McFarlin at the piano.She had been a piano teacher as well as pianist for the theatre in Williston where she provided background music for the silent movies. Several years later, Leslie McFarlin formed the second orchestra from this family and was followed by Bill McFarlin who continued the family tradition. Bliss McFarlin was an active participant in community affairs and extremely concerned about healthy outlets for the young generations leisure time. He died at the family home in Ray in Febuary 1941.
