Benbow passed away at the the Afton Care Center in Afton, Iowa at 6:17 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 1984 at the age of 95. He was the first of three children of Jesse and Mary Proctor Benbow born on the Benbow homestead north of Osceola. He attended the Clarke County schools and was affiliated with the Fremont Church in Clarke County, the Emmanual Baptist Church north of Afton and later the Afton Methodist Church. Preceding him in death were his wives, Edith Arnett and Mabel Patterson Benbow; son, Ivan E. Benbow; two grandchildren; a brother, Lon Benbow and a sister, Iva Benbow Kierulff. On December 28, 1910 he married Mabel Patterson. Three sons were born to this union. They are Kenneth of Cincinnati, Ohio; Keith of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Galen of Osceola. Mabel passed away January 21, 1924. On January 14, 1925 he married Edith Arnett at Bethany, Missouri. Two sons were born, Ivan of Louisville Kentucky and Wayne of Creston, Iowa. Edith passed away February 1, 1977. Ivan passed away at Louisville, Kentucky May 12, 1984. Leaving to mourn his passing are a sister-in-law, Florence Benbow of Osceola; Kenneth, Keith, Galen and Wayne Benbow; four daughter-in-law, Lily of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ruthanne of Raleigh, North Carolina, Clara of Osceola and Jewell of Louisville, Kentucky; 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Lafe was raised and farmed in Clarke County for 40 years. During that time he organized and helped establish the Farm Bureau in Clarke and adjoining counties. Then he moved to Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada and farmed there for nine years returning to Union County where he farmed until he was 80. Following that he retired in Afton, Iowa. One of the most recent highlights of his life was his trip with his sons back to Canada when he was 93. He declared this was the trip of a lifetime. Lafe will be remembered by his relatives and friends for his love for them, his honesty and cheerful attitude. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer
