Read More	The Osceola Sentinel Tribune, Osceola, Iowa October 31, 1996, Page 3 GALEN ARLIE BENBOW Galen Arlie Benbow, the son of Lafe and Mabel Patterson Benbow was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Washington Township, Clarke County and died Oct. 27, 1996, at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola. He was 73. Mr. Benbow's ancestors came from England. The Benbows came to Clarke County in 1870. After his mother's death in 1924 he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Lon and Florence Benbow. He attended and graduated from high school in New Virginia in 1941. After graduation he went to Cincinnati, Ohio and lived with his brother, Kenneth and his wife, Lily, for a year while he worked as an airplane engine tester for Wrights Aircraft Corporation. He entered the U.S. Air Force in the spring of 1942 and was stationed at Sheppard Field, near Wichita Falls, Texas. He joined the military police and sometimes guarded airplanes. He studied the papers that came with the planes and found his signature that indicated he had tested several of the engines. He married Clara Lela Ritter of Afton on May 23, 1944, in Chapel Number 4 at Sheppard Field. After he was discharged, he built the Lacelle Store and opened it in December 1946. The store was 12 miles southwest of Osceola. After his Uncle Lon died in 1947, his Aunt Florence came to Lacelle and operated the store until 1986, while Mr. Benbow farmed. Mr. Benbow used his ingenuity to create items to mend or change machinery to enhance his farming. He placed powerful truck motors in old tractors for speed and strength when the market offered nothing to compare with them. Guy Rinner worked for him for 34 years and became the same as a son. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lafe and Mabel Benbow and Florence and Lon Benbow; a brother, Keith and half-brothers, Wayne and Ivan Benbow. Mr. Benbow is survived by his wife, Clara Benbow; a brother, Kenneth Benbow and his wife, Lily Benbow, of Cincinnati, Ohio; mother-in-law, Mary Ritter of Osceola; a sister-in-law, Ruthanne of Raleigh, N.C; and many nieces and nephews. Services for Mr. Benbow were Oct. 30 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, the Rev. Dwayne Henrichs of Thayer officiating. Pennie Gonseth, organist accompanied Max Jensen as he sang One Day At a Time and When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder. Casket bearers were Larry Gonseth, Craig Luce, Ralph Miller, Aldean Morgan, Doug Craig and Terry Robins. Honorary casket bearers were Leland Hunt, Rick Knecht, Robert Luce, Donnie Goodrich, Bruce Harris, Don Carson and Robert Posekany. Military rites were by Davis-Pence Post No. 69 American Legion of Osceola, Interment was in Fremont Cemetery in Clarke County. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer
