Description	:	Big Timber Pioneer, January 24, 1952 Hugh L. Overfelt, 85, pioneer Sweet Grass county rancher, died at Spokane, Wash., last Thursday evening following a long illness. He had suffered a stroke at his home in Big Timber over five years ago and shortly after lost his eyesight. He left here in 1947 to make his home with a daughter, Mrs. Ray Lyon, in Spokane. Death was attributed to infirmities of old age. Funeral services were conducted from the Evangelical United Brethren church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. E. J. Bott officiating. Music was by a quartette composed of L. A. Westervelt, Lester Hathaway, James Bourne, and Rev. Bott, with Mrs. Bott accompanist. Pallbearers were Martin Cosgriff, Albert Esp, Hans Tjaaland, Oscar Nepstad, George Hughes, Clinton Carter. Burial was in Mountain View beside his wife who preceded him in death May 31, 1947. Mr. Overfelt was born March 18, 1966, at Rocky Mount, Va. He was married there in 1892 to Lydia S. Brooks, and they came to Montana in 1900 to take up a homestead near Grey Cliff, now part of the Oscar Braaten ranch. They resided there until 1912 when they moved to the old Duck Creek ranch now owned by Ben Clark. In 1914, they moved to the old Briggs-Ellis ranch across the Yellowstone now owned by Elmer Arneson. They moved three years later to Big Timber creek where they had resided until retirement eight years ago, first on the ranch now occupied by Wade Nelson and then on the present Ward Bruffey ranch adjoining. They moved to Big Timber after selling the Bruffey place. Mr. Overfelt is survived by two daughters Mrs. Ray (Ethel) Lyon of Spokane and Mrs. Edward (Florence) Fisher of Vancouver, Wash.; six sons, Glen of Livingston, Emmett of Kevin, Mont., Leo of Great Falls, Walter of Shawmut, Ervin of Big Timber, and Harry of Ventura, Calif.; a grandson, Vic Doyle was reared in the Overfelt home after the death of his mother, Mrs. Mamie Overfelt Doyle, who passed away in 1929. Vic is now in the army, stationed in Texas. Other survivors include 13 other grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. All the sons and daughters were here for the services.
