Lamonte Elwin Woollen, 90 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska, formerly of rural Wilcox, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Lamonte was born May 31, 1925, five mile southwest of Wilcox, in Harlan County, the tenth of eleven children born to John William and Lillie May (Gifford) Woollen. He attended and graduated from Wilcox High School with the class of 1943. Following his graduation, Lamonte and a friend, Billy Jensen, went to Kimball, Nebraska, where they helped an uncle with wheat harvest. He returned home and started farming. On October 26, 1954, Lamonte was inducted into the United States Army and completed basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas. He served two years as a medical technician with the 44th Surgical Hospital in Tonggu, Korea, during the Korean Conflict. He was Honorably Discharged on August 9, 1956. Lamonte enjoyed farming, was an avid Husker football fan, especially attending home games and bowl games. He is a past member of the Wilcox Lions Club, an active member of the Nebraska Farmers Union, VFW, the Wilcox American Legion and the Wilcox Community Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings and spouses: Cloie Jensen and husband, Bill, Loren Woollen and his wife, Ardyce, Gifford Woollen, William Woollen and his wife, Dorothy, Lamoyne Woollen, twin sisters, Lois Ryan and her husband, Gene and Louisa Rabe and her husband, Clifford. Left to celebrate his life include: his brothers, Melvin Woollen and his wife, Doris of Holdrege, Bernard Woollen and his wife, Juanita of Holdrege and Norden Woollen and his wife, Mary Ann of rural Wilcox; sister-in-law, Helen Woollen of Wilcox; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Wilcox. A memorial has been established in Lamonte’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
