Description	:	Lanny Lee Smith, 20, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Smith of Manson, was killed Tuesday morning at Fairbanks, Alaska where he was employed by the Peter Kiewitt construction company. The accident occurred when he and another Washingtonian were caught in the cave-in of a water main ditch. Three companions escaped. Lanny was born January 18, 1935 in Spokane and came to Manson with his parents as a small child. He attended grade school and graduated with the Manson High School class of 1953 as valedictorian. He was and Eagle Scout and a member of the Scout's staff at Scout-A-Vista in 1950. He was one of the Manson representatives to Boy's State in Ellensburg in 1952 and a four-year letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. He had just completed his sophomore year at Washington State College where he was a baseball letterman. Lanny had only recently gone to Fairbanks for this summer vacation job and was to pitch Tuesday night in the midnight ballgame at Fairbanks. He was a member of the Methodist Church and affiliated with Kappa Sigma, college fraternity. His father, Lee Smith, accompanied by Al Peterson, flew to Fairbanks Wednesday morning. Lanny is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Smith, and one brother, Dennis Brooks Smith, at home; his grandmothers, Mrs. Grace M. Whiteside of Spokane and Mrs. Alice Smith of Wenatchee. The body will be returned to Manson for funeral services, the date to be announced by Jones and Jones.
