Description	:	Larry D. Abeldt, 65, of Hope, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. He was born January 19, 1945, in Abilene, the son of Lowell and Jean (McCosh) Abeldt. He grew to manhood in rural Hope, attended Punkinhead Grade School, graduated from Hope High School with the class of 1962, and attended Kansas State University. Abeldt, 65, of Hope, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. He was born January 19, 1945, in Abilene, the son of Lowell and Jean (McCosh) Abeldt. He grew to manhood in rural Hope, attended Punkinhead Grade School, graduated from Hope High School with the class of 1962, and attended Kansas State University. He returned to the family farm and was a lifetime Farmer-Stockman. On August 14, 1971, he married Nadine Benyshek in Cuba, Kansas. He was a member of the Rosebank Church of rural Hope and attended Emmanuel Church in Abilene. He received the Young Farmers Award for outstanding achievement in 1967, served as U.S. Feeds Grain council chairman in 1982-1983, was a member of the Kansas Wheat Commission, the National Farmers Organization, the Central Kansas Free Fair in 2005-2007, the Chapman FFA Alumni from 1993 into 2010, served on the Tri County Fair Board from 1985 into 1993 where he served as president from 1990 into 1993, also serving as purebred sheep chairman. He served as the Kansas Sheep Association chairman, and Kansas Sheep Council chairman. He was a member of the Kansas Farmers Union, the Hope Township Board, the Hope volunteer fire department, and the Turkey Creek Watershed. He also worked as an auctioneer and realtor, and ran for U.S. Congress in 1980. Survivors include his four sons, Aaron Abeldt of Hope, Joe Abeldt of Hope, Josh Abeldt of Herington, and Austin Abeldt of Hope; a sister, Sandy Abeldt of Abilene. and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine, on October 30, 2009. Funeral services will be at 1 pm, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Emmanuel Church in Abilene with Pastors Charles Norman and Shane Britt officiating. Burial will be in the First Baptist Cemetery of rural Hope. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm, Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. Friends may call until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Larry Abeldt Memorial, Gideons, or the charity of their choice.
