Fiala was born to Leonard Fiala and Regina Houdek Fiala on May 3, 1950, in David City and passed away April 10, 2001, at his home in Strang, at the age of 50 years, 11 months and seven days. He was the oldest of three children. Larry was baptized in the Catholic Church in David City. He grew up on a farm near Central City where he hardly left his fathers side. This ingrained his life-long love for agriculture. He began his school days in Central City, graduating from high school in 1969. He then went on to attend Kearney State College and he was drafted into the United States Army in March, 1970. Larry served in Vietnam from August 1970 until October 1971. While there, he received the Purple Heart. During his tour of duty, his parents moved to Geneva. Upon his arrival back to the states, he rejoined his family and helped his father finish harvesting. On Feb. 3, 1973, Larry married Connie Bumgarner of Strang. They began farming near Grafton. In 1975, they moved to their new home near Strang. Two children were born; Lance Ryan on Nov. 15, 1976 and Laci Ann on October 14, 1981. Larry was a devoted husband and father. He and Connie enjoyed many activities together, including golf, water skiing, boating, movie-going, and playing cards. He took great pleasure in attending his childrens sporting competitive events. Larry followed in his fathers footsteps by instilling the same love for farming in his son, Lance. It was his dream that Lance and he would combine to create a dominate team. Laci was the apple of her fathers eye. Larry was her no. 1 fan, supporting and encouraging her many talents. Chevy power and his eye for shine fueled his love for cars and trucks. He possessed an innate quick wit; his one-liners always brought a smile to friends and family. Larry also had a unique talent for designing and building farm-related equipment. His strength, integrity, and love for family were qualities that were highly recognizable and admired by all who knew him. In 1995, Larry encountered complications from diabetes that changed his quality of life; however his sharp sense of humor prevailed throughout all the challenges he endured. During this time, his family and close friends kept his spirits high. His determination to remain involved was unyielding until the very end. Larrys farewell one-liner would have been, Miss me, but let me go. Larry is survived by his wife, Connie, son Lance and wife Dana (who gave him great excitement in their announcement of the birth of his first grandchild due this fall). He is also survived by his daughter, Laci; parents, Leonard and Regina Fiala, sister, Jean Larson and children, Kevin and Alicia, and sister, Deborah Perkins and husband Mike and their son, Cody. Funeral services were conducted at the Congregational United Church of Christ on Friday, April 13, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., with Pastors Brian Kottas and Jay Mitchell officiating. Sue Kleinschmidt provided music for the service. Karl Brinkman sang Go Rest High on that Mountain and Laci Fiala sang The Lords Prayer. Pallbearers were Richard Girmus, Don Beck, Scott Houck, Delton Myers, Jaron Schweitzer, and Derek Schweitzer. Interment with military honors was held at the Geneva Cemetery.
