Description	:	Leonard, J. Fiala, 90, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2014, after a brave battle with esophageal cancer at Fairview Manor in Fairmont. Leonard was born to Joseph J. and Hermania A. (Rerucha) Fiala in Bruno on September 9, 1924. He was the eldest of three sons--Leonard, Edmund and Richard. Fiala, 90, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2014, after a brave battle with esophageal cancer at Fairview Manor in Fairmont. Leonard was born to Joseph J. and Hermania A. (Rerucha) Fiala in Bruno on September 9, 1924. He was the eldest of three sons--Leonard, Edmund and Richard. Leonard was married on June 19, 1947, at Dwight Assumption Catholic Church to Regina M. Houdek. Leonard was a World War II Army Veteran. He served in France/Germany/Austria from July 1944 to July 1946 as a machine gunner. Upon his return home, Leonard started his life vocation, farming near David City and continued farming for 56 years by Polk, Central City and Geneva. Leonard was a partner in the John Deer Implement dealership in Geneva from 1969-1971. Tractor pulling was Leonard's greatest passion, being sponsored by Minneapolis Moline, John Deere and International dealers. Restoring old tractors was one of his hobbies-one of which he drove in the 4th of July Parade in Geneva in 2013. Leonard was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a Third Degree Knight. He was also a member of the VFW Post No. 7102 and American Legion Post No. 68. Leonard is preceded in death by his son, Larry R. Fiala; brother, Richard (Skip) Fiala; and half-brothers, Joe and Marvin. He is survived by his wife, Regina; and daughters, Jean Huntington (Dave), and Deborah Edgar (Mike); daughter-in-law, Connie Fiala (widow of Larry); grandchildren, Lance R. Fiala (Dana), Laci Fiala (Aaron), Kevin Larson (Brittiany), Alicia Micek (Aaron), Cody Loyd (Jordan); and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Edmund Fiala; and half-sisters, Evelyn, Aldeane and Mary Ann. Funeral services were conducted December 27, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Geneva. Mary Ann Najmon accompanied the congregation who sang "Be Not Afraid" and "How Great Thou Art." Karl Brinkman accompanied himself with his guitar and sang "On Eagle's Wings" and "The Lord's Prayer." Gift bearers were Dana Fiala, Brittany Larson, Alicia Micek and Jordan Loyd. Pallbearers were Lance Fiala, Kevin Larson, Cody Loyd, Aaron Micek, Mark Fiala and Doug Fiala. Honorary pallbearers were his great-grandchildren: Raegan, Tayrn, and Layton Fiala, Addison Ades and Callie and Carter Larson. Graveside committal services with Military Honor's provided by the Geneva American Legion and the Geneva VFW were at the St. Joseph Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal January 7, 2015 Pg. 4A Col. 3&4
