Description	:	DIED - at Davenport, Iowa, on December 28, of enlarged tumor of the neck, Lars Hannibal of Dannebrog, in this county. Mr. Hannibal was born July 3, 1822 in the province of Laaland in Denmark and was therefore sixty years, four months and twenty-five days of age. He served three years in the Danish army during the war with the Prussians, and the rebels, in 1848, '49, '50. Read More	DIED - at Davenport, Iowa, on December 28, of enlarged tumor of the neck, Lars Hannibal of Dannebrog, in this county. Mr. Hannibal was born July 3, 1822 in the province of Laaland in Denmark and was therefore sixty years, four months and twenty-five days of age. He served three years in the Danish army during the war with the Prussians, and the rebels, in 1848, '49, '50. He moved to America in 1856 and settled in Wisconsin, and at the breaking out of the rebellion, he enlisted in Co. B. 15th, Wis. Vol. infantry in which he served faithfully as Orderly Sergeant, partaking in all of the great battles with the army of the Cumberland, being at Shiloh, Corinth and other places well remembered by the boys in blue. In 1863 his eye sight failing him, he was given an honorable discharge and he returned to Wisconsin. In the winter of 1870-71, he organized the Danish Land Company, of which he was made president. In the spring of 1871 he came to this county and located the present village of Dannebrog, which he settled with Danish people the coming summer. His history during the eleven years that he has resided in this county is familiar to all of our old settler readers, always cheerful and obliging, he was rightfully considered the patriarch of the flourishing colony in which he took so much pride. His was a life of purity and probity and a fitting example of noble manhood for the youth of today to follow. His family was large, his wife bringing five children by a former marriage, and bringing him four, three of whom are in Nebraska. Peter is attending the State University at Lincoln, Rasmus is with the grocery establishment of Mads Anderson and Hannah is the wife of Jens Wilhelmsen, all respected citizens. The other brother was in Texas when last heard from. Mr. Hannibal's funeral took place last Wednesday at Dannebrog under the auspices of Post Canby of the GAR of St. Paul and was attended by the largest concourse of people ever assembled in Howard county to do homage to the dead. Rev. Madsen preached the sermon in the Danish language, and the services at the grave were partially Danish and English, thus intermingling in testimonials to the goodness and greatness of he whom in life found equal joy in representing both Nations [illegible] home, in public and upon their fields of battle. To the fond and devoted husband and father, the faithful and courageous soldier and patriot and the honored and respected citizen, the last rite has been performed.
