Laura Ann Baker was born in the township of Brock, Port Perry, Ontario, Canada on July 4, 1869, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baker. In 1873, when Laura was four years old, she moved to Palo Alto county with her parents and brothers. Her parents farmed in Vernon township. Mrs. Starr was one of the early country school teachers. She taught school in Vernon township for three years before her marriage to Carl S. Starr on April 21, 1891. In 1885 the couple moved to Emmetsburg from the farm and they have lived here since that time. Mrs. Starr was very active in community life. She was a member of the First Congregational church for over 55 years. She was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge, Eastern Star and one of the first members of the Emmetsburg Friday club. Possessor of a brilliant mind and an engaging personality, Mrs. Starr w«s perhaps one of the best read citizens of Emmetsburg and despite her long years of frail health, she kept abreast of the times by reading leading periodicals and papers and by her interest in her friends activities. At Christmas time last December, her husband brought her to the Friday club's annual holiday meeting at the home of a neighbor, Mrs. W.H. Morling. Fragile and in poor health, Mrs. Starr was carried into the Morling home but she was happy to be among her friends in the club and no one appeared to enjoy the Christmas program more than she. One of the fine things in her life was the companionship she and her husband shared. During their 58 years of married life, Mr. Starr devoted much of his leisure time to helping and encouraging his wife who had never been in robust health. Friends often commented on their compatibility. Mrs. Starr had been a patient in the local hospital only nine days at the time of her death. Dr. Freeman Starr of Mason City, a son survives. She also leaves her husband, and a nephew, Herbert Baker, and a grand niece, Molly Baker, all of Emmetsburg and one grandson of Mason City.
