Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Jane Cooper Collins, eighty-nine, widow of Benjamin Grier Collins, who died Wednesday at her summer home at Myrtle Beach were held Wednesday afternoon at the Conway Methodist Church. She was born near Conway, Horry County, a daughter of Timothy A. and Mrs. Harriet Beaty Cooper. After attending the schools of the county she married Benjamin Grier Collins, a pioneer merchant of the county and probably the outstanding philanthropist of this section who died nearly nine years ago. With her husband, Mrs. Collins contributed to the erection of and the furnishing of churches in practically every section of the county. In addition to her church work she had during her long life, she contributed freely to the sick and suffering and ministered to their needs. Known as the "Grand Old Lady of Conway", she was held in highest esteem by people in all walks of life with whom she came in contact and her advice, aid and aims frequently were sought in charitable objectives. In the late months she had been unable to visit often but her home was visited daily by people in all walks of life. Surviving are five daughters and two sons, twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. Present and taking part in the funeral service were the Rev. B. L. McKnight, her pastor, the Rev. W. J. Snyder of Sumter, the Rev. Dr. J. Harvey Danner of Sumter, the Rev. G. Emory Edwards of Dillon, The Rev. W. A. Beckman of Walterboro, and the Rev. Pierce Cook of Myrtle Beach, former pastors and the Rev. John Hehl of Columbia, a grandson, Six of her grandsons acted as active pallbearers and several distinguished citizens of the county were honorary pallbearers. Burial was beside the grave of her husband in the Methodist church yard. DOES HONOR TO 87th BIRTHDAY At her historic home on Elm Street in Conway, Mrs. Laura Cooper Collins, widow of Benjamin Grier Collins, celebrated her eighty-seventh birthday on Sunday, April 12. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives gathered at the home to extend their congratulations. Colonel D. A. Spivey, a son-in-law of Mrs. Collins, spoke briefly and the large birthday cake bearing eighty-seven candles was cut. In excellent health and in her usual jovial manner, Mrs. Collins spent a very happy day. The daughter of the late Timothy Cooper and Harriet Beaty Cooper, Mrs. Collins has a distinguished ancestry. Born in Horry County, she received her education in the schools of the county and married Bengamin Grier Collins, a native of Georgetown County, who came to Conway in early manhood and amassed considerable holdings as a member of the firm of Burroughs & Collins. This firm is still operating after half-century existence, Collins died in 1929. Of eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Collins, three, Mrs. Olla McWhite, Mrs. Essie Spivey and Nina Collins are dead. The other eight are: A. T., H. S. and M. W. Collins, all of Conway; Mrs. Thomas E Cooper, of Wilmington; Miss Mitchelle Collins, Conway; Mrs. Jess Stancill, Allenton, SC; Mrs. John Register, Jacksonville; Mrs. A. C. Thompson, Conway.
