Louise was born in 1916 at Dickinson to John and Katherine (Munro) Hanson. She spent the first years of her life in rural Billings County on her parents' homestead, and attended rural school near the Logging Camp Ranch. She graduated from Dickinson High School and Dickinson State College, and taught rural school for a short time. Later, Louise went to Capitol Commercial College in Bismarck and took a general secretarial clerical administrative course. This served her well, and her fine skills eventually provided her work for various governmental agencies, including the state of North Dakota in the governor's office for Governor John Moses and at a war refugee camp at Fort Lincoln during World War II. Louise married Theodore Kopseng on Jan. 4, 1944, and they had three children. Theodore passed away in 1990. She married Ben Klein on July 25, 1992, and they made their home in Bismarck. Louise was a leading businesswoman in Bismarck. She was the daughter of homesteaders and became a self-made real estate developer of rental properties. She both altered existing real estate and designed and built her own properties. She was a formidable force in Bismarck real estate from the '40s through the '70s. Some of her more well-known achievements were the alteration of the old Remington house property nursing home and adjoining carriage house at 610 Seventh St. in Bismarck, which she turned into nine rental units as well as building a new eight-unit apartment house on the lot. Louise invested in real estate with a clear vision of knowing how to add value to what she saw, and had the skills to implement her vision. She believed in Bismarck and always said, "Fundamentally it is a good business town which will continue to grow as it is well positioned as the state capitol." She and Ted Kopseng were also lovers of North Dakota and its history, and participated in numerous projects as volunteers. Many well-known people rented from her, some becoming lifelong tenants and friends. She combined her development skills with rearing a family and later working as a legal secretary for the law offices of Patrick Conmy and his various partners for 21 years after her children were grown. She was a woman ahead of her time and place. If she had not chosen business, her sharp mind and skills would have been put to use in law, as she always found the law particularly interesting. Her two granddaughters are lawyers. Louise loved playing bridge and was a member of many bridge clubs. She was a member of various fraternal organizations including Retired Federal Employees, Elketts, Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors Mansion, VFW Auxiliary and the Golden Kiwanis Club. She was a charter member of the Apple Creek Country Club. She is survived by her loving husband, Ben; two daughters and one son-in-law, Donna and Gary Engel and Karen Kopseng, all of New York City, N.Y.; one son and daughter-in-law, Loren and Dawn Kopseng, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Bradford Davis, Allison Engel, Leah and K.J. Coghlan, Ryan Kopseng, Sander Kopseng and Hunter Kopseng; one great-granddaughter, Darian Coghlan; one sister, Victoria Stegner, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, William R. and Helen Hanson, Los Angeles, Calif., and Robert L. Hanson, Bowman; and many nieces and nephews. Louise was preceded in death by her parents. Bismarck Tribune November 20, 2001
