Description	:	Laura Mae Smith, age 91, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on June 24, 2016 at Acosta-Rua Center for Caring with her loving family by her side. Laura was born in Highland, Florida on August 31, 1924 to the late Clarence Cannon, Sr. and Laura Griffis Cannon. Read More	Laura Mae Smith, age 91, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on June 24, 2016 at Acosta-Rua Center for Caring with her loving family by her side. Laura was born in Highland, Florida on August 31, 1924 to the late Clarence Cannon, Sr. and Laura Griffis Cannon. Laura was raised in Bradford County where she met the love of her life, Lonzie Edward Smith. Lonzie and Laura were happily married in 1945. They resided in Baldwin until relocating to Jacksonville in 1948. Laura was a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed taking care of her family, raising her children, and cooking for everyone. Laura was a Homemaker for the majority of her life until her husband passed away in 1968. Soon after Lonzie's passing, Laura started her longtime career as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Northeast Florida State Hospital where she later retired after 17 years of service. Laura grew up on a farm and was always passionate about gardening, farming, and picking fruits and vegetables out of the You Pick fields. She also enjoyed shopping, especially at garage sales and thrift shops. Most of all, Laura loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 23 years, Lonzie Edward Smith; her daughter, Carol Slaughter; her 3 brothers; 3 sisters; and her great grandson, Garrett. Laura is survived by her loving son, Gerald Smith of Minneola, FL; her son-in-law, Tommy Slaughter of Waycross, GA; her sister, Beaulahvieve (Harry) Busbee of Jacksonville, FL; her 3 grandchildren, Denise (Paul) Gonzalez, Mardy (Denise) McEachern, and Kerri (Steve) Hicks; her adopted granddaughter, Gloria Ann (Mike) Kershner; her 9 great grandchildren, Katie, Charles, Laurel, Holden, Tyler, Megan, Jesse, Breanna, and Kali; and her 4 great-great grandchildren. A Celebration of Laura's Life will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 10:00 am at the V. Todd Ferreira Funeral Services Chapel with Reverend Bob Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Long Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
